: How great is 6x6 off road???
Now I have never driven a 6 wheel drive truck but off road other than mud i dont see the benefit of the extra axle. In the mud or as a fire road truck that extra axle would be nice but the twisty shit and rocks look like it would be just one more thing to have to worry about getting hung up on something. Please enlighten me on these new 6x6s comming out.

pcorssmit 02-23-2002, 04:35 PM I've got a pretty cool shot of my junk on that rock, bought one of those big ($$) action shot pics. His pic doesn't even have anyone hanging off the front bumper. :flipoff2: I think that guy usually stays at the same campground as us during EJS, there's 2 6x6 jeeps that I always see out there.

Cutter 02-23-2002, 06:49 PM if your talking 'bout factory 6X6 stuff like military, the extra axle is for increased load bearing. And as nice as that Jeep above is that is never needed, it's just a gimmick...he didn't improve anything that a wheelbase increase wouldn't do for a lot less money, time, and complexity. And yet I do understand why people do stuff like that:D
out here in australia there is a company that has been doing this conversion for awhile, there main sales market is in the landcruiser utes and they sell to primary industries such as builders, power companys etc. It increase the hj75 one ton out to about a 3.5 ton so makes good for carring cables and other crap. Also the extra tray length on the ute helps when you have to hall all the crap 2000+ miles over dirty roads.

Oh i under stand the utility reasons to have 6x6 but for fun and games rocks as that heep pointed out it didnt help it any, it still cant flex worth a damn.
all i can think about is yah have to buy 2 more rims and 2 more tires. then again if yah got the money to waste on and axle yah dont need, yah got the money to buy 2 extra tires and rims
dont get me wrong daniel, i think what you are doing is great and some quality stuff. but i think the 6x6s should stick to the show circut. theres no way a 6x6 belongs on the trails. and even if it is on the trails ill bet the extra axle hinders more than it helps, guess im just anti 6x6.
jon bachelder 02-27-2002, 06:23 AM I rode in a 1942 Dodge military 6x6 down to Rubicon Springs once. All axles were open, the rig is completely stock and it did not spin a tire once or have a lick of trouble. This is a big unit for the 'Con. There are always at least 3-4 tires on the ground so it just keeps going. Carries a lot of beer too.
It is a bitch to turn though.

Klasick68 02-27-2002, 06:39 AM I might just get to find out how good a 6X is on the trails if I can ever keep the fuckin thing going. A friend of mine has a 52 GMC M211 that he got for $500, keeps tearing up axle shafts though, not sure why. on bald ass NDT's i doubt it will do shit but if not, there is always that badass pto winch to get it out, now to find something big enough to hook to..... maybe like 10 trees?? (that would be one fukin huge tree saver strap!!!) also does anyone know why these axle shafts are so damned weak?? they are huge, but twist off like nothin

Yeah but that doesn't count, didn't you guys put Coilovers on that Dodge??? So it has nothing to do with the second rear axle. besides; that statement is true with any/most rigs on this board. So that can't be considered a "BENEFIT"
