: Which winch?
Welby 02-23-2002, 04:35 PM OK, gonna buy a winch. I'm giving myself a $750 cap. What would you go for?
I've seen the Warn M8000 for $599, but it has a hawse and only 80ft of cable.
National Tire has the Ramsey Platinum 9000 for $699. 3.6 HP, 150ft cable, and roller fairlead. They also have the Platinum 9500 for $749. Same as the 9000, but with 4.8HP motor...
So what would you go for:
Warn M8000
Ramsey Platinum 9000
Ramsey Platinum 9500
Something else?
Thanks,
Mark
BillaVista 02-23-2002, 04:57 PM Used 8274.
With your budget, if you score an old one cheap enough...you can even slap in a new motor and solenoids and be under budget.
Charles Aarons 02-23-2002, 05:03 PM A Pierce 8000 lb PTO winch sells for $543 from Pierce Sales. Plus cost of PTO, driveline and cable.
Charlie
CJBoxer 02-23-2002, 05:10 PM Yeah if you can find one an 8274. Otherwise an i -series Warn, Ramsey also has there new Patriot series with 5.5hp  Somebody may know where you can get a new 8274-50 for around $850.
edit: oops it is $860 from Parts America #38631 :D
MattS 02-23-2002, 05:37 PM I hate to say it but...watch the for sale section over on JU. I scored a 8000i for $600 and a 9000 for $650. Both new in box. :D I saw one over there last week that was reasonable.
Live Wire 02-23-2002, 05:39 PM None of the above. I would find a used Warn 8274 with a roller fairlead.
85toyboy 02-23-2002, 05:57 PM Ditto what the majority have said, look through the classifieds and find a used Warn 8274. Sometimes you can find someone who has no clue what they are selling and score a great deal. Thats what I did, got mine for $40! :D
coachgeo 02-23-2002, 06:19 PM how bout a 1200lb pierce... 200 bucs with big ass cable... needs a new motor.. (100 buks) use $$ left over for winch rope
Email me if ur interested..
oh yeah... it has a mix mathed rigged solonoid box and remote but it should work
CrazyHorse 02-23-2002, 07:00 PM coachgeo-is that 1200LB or 12000LB? If it's 12000 I might be interested, got any pix?
Bill Collins 02-23-2002, 07:05 PM i traded a half wore out set of 30x9.50 cooper mud tires for my 8274,works great...
A used 8274 is a pretty good deal but you're gonna spend 40 hours and a couple hundred dollars working on it over the next few years. Alternatively, you can find a new M8000 for $550 if you're patient and not have to touch it for 5-10 years, but it's probably not as good of a winch. Ramsey winches seem to be fine but I've heard they gouge you on replacement parts like solenoids - check me on that, but that's what someone told me. Most people nowadays seem to be buying the 9000-9500 models for $100+ more than the M8000, and I find that hard to justify. With a snatch block for an option, I don't think there are many places where a 9500 will get you out but an 8000 won't. If an 8000 isn't big enough, I think you ought to be looking at a 12K. One other thing to think about is what sort of group you usually go with. If you have the only winch, you'll want one that runs faster and stays cooler so you can pull 5 people in a row up a hill without overheating.
Oh yeah, 2 more things. You can run the M8000 with rollers, the hawse just bolts on front of the mount plate, easy to replace. Second, the 8274 is much more suitable to running a rope, which is a big argument in favor of the 8274.
dirtrod 02-23-2002, 07:31 PM Get a 8274 and pass it on to your grandkids when you are too old to wheel.
Grim Reaper 02-23-2002, 08:12 PM WARN. I have seen to many Ramseys tear up.
Save a few extra bucks and you can get a 9500 Warn. Clemson4wd and Tellico 4x4 often have sales down near the $800 mark with shipping.
Used 8274 also.
I have been on the recovery end of both those winches. I'm over 6k and I had a bud yank me up Gardrail with a 8274. If it had been anything else I would have rolled. The line speed caught me after I bounced and kept my truck from rolling. It's on vid. Pretty impressive. truck caught traction when up on 2 wheels and I got a BUNCH slack in the cable. If it had been a slower winch I would have been done and probably dragged the cruiser off the hill with me if my truck had gone over. I have seen 8274's do that time and time again. That line speed can save your butt. The Warn 9500i is almost as fast and still faster than anything else other than the 8274. Problem is new 8274's are $1k.
Slower winches you often get in situations where the truck can start moving but you have to lay back and wait for the winch so you don't run over the cable.

tail_lite 02-24-2002, 12:39 AM I would pick Warn 8000
Most everyone here uses them, and the big plus is the hand crontrols are usuable with each others winch should one or two screw up, etc...
I agree with the 8274. I picked mine up, put a new motor in it, new wire rope, and new controllers and new wiring for well under your budget.
Chad H 02-24-2002, 02:24 AM Your gonna wheel Welby
Ive had 2 different winches on my Bronco, an old 8274, which came with it, and a Warn 9000i. believe it or not the old timer seemed to pull better, the 9000 alsp had a bad solinoid after 2 months...
loveshackle 02-24-2002, 02:59 AM Warn HS9500 (or i). Great speed, nice mountability, 125'. Nothing against the warhorse, just really happy with the 2 of these that I run...

Benny 02-24-2002, 05:16 AM I payed $775 for my Warn HS9500i from Six States. I love it. although I personally cant compare to anything else because I have not owned any other winch. But its top quality.
125' of cable
mytzlflick 02-24-2002, 06:27 AM the 8274 is a nice winch but lacks power compared to a good pto, and don't bother arguing line speed or overheating either, my old konig pto driven off the case had a 60hp flathead engine powering it and 4 speeds available. it was awsome. only kind of winch I will ever own.
You guys that keep mentioning the PTO have got me interested. I always ass-of-me'd that it wasn't an option unless it came factory but I just searched Google and I see a bunch of XJ's that have add-on Koenig's especially with Dana 18s. And no I HAVEN'T searched for PTOs here yet so I'm not asking a question :rasta: but the next time one of you feels compelled to suggest the PTO, would you mind dropping a few more buzzwords to help me search for them? (and could you spell them right please - its koenig, not konig)

So you guys are pretty much saying to swerve away from the Ramseys.. What about Superwinch? I know hitting $800 is only $50 more, but really the $750 is pushing it for me. I'm trying to balance out price with how often it would be used. I want to get into some better wheeling (Tellico, Big Dogs, things like that) so I know I need one. I'd go for the M8000 if it wasn't for only having 80' of cable. That seems a little low, if you ask me :(. $599 sounded good though :D
Cutter 02-24-2002, 07:48 AM Hey Welby, I run a warn M8000 and mine came with 100' of cable and a roller fairlead for $620 from Earl Owen co. 1.800.527.2006 I don't know what they go for today but this just shows that there is a big price differance out there for the same winch.
BTW i've used this little baby a lot to yank people over stuff and it's plenty big enough. line speed is kinda slow, but that don't really matter in the real world...
I might be able to get you a HS9500 for under 8 bills in Columbus, Ohio if you want to drive to get it.
This place is down the street and I know the guy:
http://www.trailquest.com/
I have the HS9500 and wheel with guys with 8274. The HS9500 free spools much better and is just as fast and is easier to mount. The 8274 has more cable and is less likely to bind up.
I don't know if this helps, you might be able to get one delivered to your door for under 8 bills.
Kman
To me a big item is line speed (load and no load). I do not know how you are geared but if you want to crawl and winch up an obstacle you CAN NOT due this with a SLOW winch (some ramsey models, superwinch). Most warns have the fast no load speed so they will pick up slack while you are crawlin.
This comes in handy in Tellico unless your rig is BIG and you just hammer it...no me.
I have had older generation ramsey and the HS9500. Warn quality seems much better.
badassjeepguy 02-24-2002, 09:12 AM i will be pickin up a hs9500 in the next month... my rep 8000 is being retired.... for 50$ more than what you want to spend... this is a damn good winch..
Call Rod @ heberling & beck.......... 724-539-9533........ tell him i sent ya

mjcj7 02-24-2002, 03:50 PM I got my hs9500 from Clemson offroad for about 750.
And it doesnt mater how many times you need it !!
You need it to work when you need it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had my M8000 for 4 years with out problems...I had one electrical problem one time that was my fault...
I agree that the HS9500 warn is a Great winch.. but fo the budget minded like yourself.. YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH AN M8000...I replaced my cable when it was bad with 110'... and it worked great...save your pennies and get the old fashion M8000!

I love it I love it I love it!!!!!!! BADASS is BUYING A WARN!!! HEHEHEHEHEHhee:flipoff2: :flipoff2: all those years defending the Ramsey and he finally gave in!!!!!!!!!!!!
pmurf1 02-24-2002, 04:05 PM HS9500I. Period.
It's done everything from winch me over from all 4 tires rubber side up, to big AZ waterfalls without failing. If you've seen the pictures of the AZ trail "Asylum", it's what I'm depending on to save my life literally to get me up that last waterfall. I was stuck so bad on the AZ trail "Bad Medicine" that I broke 3 of four axles and still pulled two Toyotas backwards with it.
For all of you idiots who have never wheeled on the west coast, here's a question for you: What do you do when your rig is upside down and you need your winch to work? You think a PTO winch is gonna do you much good in that case? Wake the fuck up. It may work in Ohio, but not in any of the states where there is true rockcrawling.
9500I is my choice. Go big or go home.

I would just like to clarify that I am stuck in OHIO and I am AWAKE and I recommended the HS9500. There is rock crawling in Ohio, like 3 or 4 rocks to crawl :). I agree with your statement. Half of the trucks that need winchin are dead in the water so what is hydraulic? NO GOOD.

Hey pmurf1, 9500 aint big. It’s one hell of a nice winch, and fast, but the size difference between it and the 8000 is less than the error factor on cable-breaking load, and not much more than the difference between a 4th layer pull and a 2nd layer pull. When you add in the option of using a snatch block, there’s very few stuck situations that a 9500 will get you out of that a 8000 won’t. Now a M12k or M15k, that’s what I would call big.
BTW, have you winched up that 30’ waterfall yet? You drive a Toy, right? What does it weigh? What size cable are you running, 3/8? You got any pics of your other waterfall pulls?
On the PTOs, their drawback is the same as hydraulics, they only run if the motors running. But they have lots of advantages. If I did a lot of winching I’d sure consider getting one (especially in mud country), but I’d also carry along a hitch-mounted M8000 for the dead-engine situations.

FJ4ZROX 02-25-2002, 06:21 AM I owned a Ramsey 9k Pro+ which served me just fine until I saw the difference in unloaded line speed for the Warn 8274. To ensure max air flow thru the radiator, I decided to go with a Warn HS9500 instead of the 8274 when I upgraded my Ramsey. I have used the Warn a bunch of times since - including pulling a friends Ford F250 out of a "soft spot" on his property which left him axle deep in mud.
Just last month, I won a new Ramsey Plat. 9500 and decided to keep the Warn due to the line speed and air flow. Nothing wrong with the Ramseys - mine was a good, reliable winch - never let me down....just took it's time doing it's job ;) :D

mtndewmaniac 04-01-2002, 01:15 AM I purchased my 8274 @6 months ago for my XJ. Didn't have to do anything to it except unspool the cable to check it, (LOVE THAT LINE SPEED) check the oil level, inspect the gears, drum, case roller fairlead, remote, ( you get the picture)Only paid $150.00. Come to find out from the original owner, he only used it a few times, and not too hard either.
Yeah, yeah, it is on an XJ, but I have friends running rigs that are more GVW, and I don't want to have a winch fail.
Hydraulic and pto winches have their place, in the flatlands where they don't roll over.:flipoff2:

ToddK,
Thanks, but I picked up a Warn x8000i about 3 weeks ago :)
Lil Uzi 04-01-2002, 07:58 AM Remember the 8274 has a significantly higher profile, which may or may not affect your rig, i.e cooling/overheating. Also remember the winch ratings are for the last coil on the drum. None of the winches have their rated power until you unwind them almost completely. Xtra long cable works against you here. Louis told me to use the come a long and bow up on it.......:flipoff2:
High5 04-01-2002, 07:33 PM i got a used m8274 for $300 and ripped the old ramsey off my jeep! that ramsey was slow!!!! i love the 8274. all i had to do to mine was put on a new cble and it works great. it has a great life expectancy compared to other winches. they last forever!!!
skulltoy 04-01-2002, 07:49 PM I just paid $350 for a m10000 with a roller fairlead, and a snatch block.
Gotta watch that newspaper!

TODDK can you still get that winch ? I'd be interested.
paid 711 for my hs9500 warn.
and i prefer the hawse. as a matter of fact i gave my roller away and bought a hawse.
Aceguy 04-04-2002, 09:41 PM I paid $750 for my hs9500i. Roller fairleads are not built for rockcrawling. I killed two last season. Switched to hawse.
