Has anyone ever tried converting a C30 from 2wd to 4wd??? I might be able to get an '85 C30 dually but it is 2wd.
What would be involved besides transfer, axle, and driveline???
Thanks

It can be done. GM frames are universal so it has the holes for either set up. The BIG problem will be the front crossmember under the engine. In a 2wd application the cross member and front suspension will bolt off. Problem is a 4wd crossmember will not bolt in without spreading the frame. There is a solution. Popular thing to do to correct some steering issues is to do a cross over front steering. There are aftemarket crossmembers for this that are bolt in.You will also need to find the 4x4 motor mounts. The attach differently.
Check here www.coloradok5.com and there is a review on the front page of the MO Offroad outfitters crossmember.
The rest of the stuff like spring hangers can be salvaged off a doaner frame. Holes will allready be there to mount all that stuff.
I mentioned the crossover steering. one of the big things is to have a 2wd steering box. to do this. the 4wd box and 2wd boxes are different. So being that you will already have to deal with the crossmember it would probably be eaisest to do the crossover right off the bat. only thing you will be missing is the passenger side steering arm and drag link. The CK5 site will also have information on that conversion.
It's not uncommon to swap a 4wd into a 2wd on the first Gen blazers by doing the reverse. Take some work but it is doable. The big ticet ite will be the D60 front axle. Dually fronts are cheaper than the singles.

why would you have to spread the frame?
I have removed a few and never spread the frame
I have a 2wdr 1ton frame converted
never had to take crossmembers out other then the ones being replaced

I'm in the final stages of the swap on my 87 sub. I had to remove the 2wd crossmember to put in the 4wd crossmember. the framerails had to be pulled back together might have been the weight of the diesel. My frame didn't have the hole for the 4wd parts had to drill them. Its not to bad of a job.
