: SM420 T'case linkage

I finished fabricating the transfercase linkage for the sm420 swap. It uses a new 2wd/4wd shift bell crank along with the original Toyota 4sp shift lever and Hi/Lo shift arm. It bolts on to the sm420 and uses the stock 3 speed 2wd/4wd shift fork. It works well. If anyone is interested, I have a template that you can have and I made an extra set if you would prefer not to fabricate it yourself.

I got the sm420 installed and just have to button it up tomorrow.

Do you know what year tranny that is? I'm trying to figure out what year they started putting that stupid ridge along the case. It makes it a real hassle to do the linkage the same as your tranny and a 465/435/T-18.

My tranny has a casting date of Aug 30, 1961. I believe that they started using the ribbed case in either 1965 or 66.

Thanks Pin Head! Thats good info, I think that rib is super lame! I have a template that I made for a SM465 a few years ago that works perfect, and is close enough to work with slight modifactions on a 420, except for that lame ass rib gets in the way.

Jeff,

Just from eyeballing the picture of the sm420 with the web, the bracket I made might clear the web. If it didn't, you could mount the bracket slightly higher and make a correspondingly longer lever arm or you could just grind a notch in the web.

I'm thinking the model you have in the pic is a proto-type unless you were just trying to make it lighter with those extra holes. :D

I have a sm420 and it has ribs- Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't GM stop making the 420 in '67? So I have a 65-67 tranny?

I tried decoding the casting mark on the drivers side, but it didn't make sense according to the casting info I read somewhere...

Anyone know?

The casting code is pretty easy. It starts with a letter A-L for the month. Then it is followed by two digits for the day, then two digits for the year.

H3061 is August 30, 1961.

BTW, yes the extra holes were from trial and error. I sold the extra set already. I have a few more parts left over, so if anyone else wants a shifter let me know.

Also, Jackson Hole was a blast!! :smokin:

Yes, you need to spend more time on the West Coast. I bet Jackson hole was nice. Did you do some wheeling? I was in Garmisch last month.

Been spending it all at home! Off since 1/15 and not flying again until 3/22!!:smokin: :smokin: I do a week of Paris-Frankfurt at the end of this month, then a couple of months off for ankle surgery (bone spurs are a bitch!!) and cruiser wrenching. ;)

I might make the left coast in late May or early June!

No wheeling in Jackson, just a 6 day Valentine's skiing vacation for the Mrs incuding a day of heli-skiing! I highly recommend it!!
