: General Truck question: Calif Emissions and engine swaps
Bill Plein 02-24-2002, 12:27 AM All-
If I want to build up a rig based on an older truck platform (be it Ford EB, IH Scout, whatever), and I want it to be street legal, what are the smog laws? I'm generally aware of the late model passenger vehicle laws regarding engine swaps (must be an engine offered in that vehicle that model year, etc.).
But what about trucks? What's the cutoff I need to worry about?
My concept is to buy an older vehicle, swap motors as part of my build out. What year cutoffs make it so it becomes smog exempt, and what engine swap rules hold for those that are newer than the cutoff?
Thanks in advance.
SHERPA 02-24-2002, 06:14 AM since you're from Eldo, anything 1973 and older is gonna get you
a vehicle you can pretty much do whatever you like as far as motors are concerned. once you've gone beyond 1973, you
have to comply with any/all smog regs for that model year/motor.

I'm not considering building a "special" vehicle, so I won't be able to hop on that program. I guess I'd fall under the normal engine swap rules.
Thanks for the link, though.
StinkBug 02-24-2002, 06:43 PM basically in cali, if its pre 1974 you can do whatever you want with it. if its post 74 then the motor must be the same year or newer and have all smog equipment. Also if the truck was originallly a diesel you dont have to take it in for smog checks so you can get away with just about anything. one of my friends is putting a 2.0L 16v with a turbo in an old VW rabbit pickup that was a diesel. no one will ever look at the car so he'll never get caught.

ranger 02-24-2002, 06:49 PM Sometimes the state send out vehicle visual inspection notices for people that have Diesels. Thats because people swap out diesels for gas engines and think they won't get caught......Something to think about.............:skull:
Bill Plein 02-24-2002, 09:53 PM One of my thoughts (I have many, so don't take them too seriously) is to put swap the V6 out of my Exploder and put in a 302. But that's not extreme.
Swapping the 302 for a 347 Streetfighter ~is~ a bit more extreme. It's a 302 externally, but internally it is stroked to within an inch of its life. So it will bolt into anything that will accept a 302.

They offer a "50-state street legal" engine to replace the Ford 302/5.0L.
I think what I'd have to do is get a stock 302 setup from a 97+ Exploder OK'd by the state, then swap the long block out for this one.
I better hit the Lotto first, as this could cost me a Lotto money.
The other thought was to go with a Ford EB, and then drop in 347.
Bill, instead of the 347 in a EB, go 351 Stroker. The 351W is a very popular swap and it is a bolt in as far as tranny/motor mounts go. I've seen kits for a 427 CID stroker kit in a 351W block.

Bill Plein 02-26-2002, 01:31 PM Since the 351 fits into the EB, that would be the right way to go (lots cheaper).
The guys who make the 347 say that they have a street legal version for my '97 explorer. That makes it off topic for General 4x4 (because my explorer isn't yet rock-worthy), but 350+hp in a Explorer sounds pretty fun nonetheless (grin).
SMART ASS 02-26-2002, 01:42 PM Ok, ok, for the 5th time in a week
(this is an email i recieved from the california reff)
