: Radiator Recommendation: 350 TBI in YJ

Hey,

One of my last decisions is what radiator to run.

This is an 89 350 TBI going in a 95 YJ (has the 4 cyl), with a manual tranny. I will be running the mechanical fan.

The current radiator's dimensions are about 22" x 22".

I know of Mepco's brass conversion radiator (goes for about $269), not sure the # of cores on that one yet (website sucks).

Looking in Summit and Jeg's, they have universal radiators from Be Cool, Howe and Griffin. If I remember correctly these are all aluminum. They are available in a 19 x 22" size and I think one has a 19 x 24" version.

Any recommendations?

Yes I am in Maine, but it does get hot (and REAL humid) here in the summer, and there will be an 8274 out in front of all this, so I'm looking for adequate cooling.

Also, with the universal's how hard is it to build brackets? Any tips?

Thanks,

Charly

I have the Be-cool rad in my '90 YJ in front of a SB400...well now its a 305tpi since I just swapped it yesterday. Fits fine and works very well. I did have some issues with cooling the 400 but that engine runs notoriously hot. I had to add an electric fan as well. With the 305 in there now I should have no issues and should not need the additional fan.

I have the Mepco 4 core trying to cool a 390Hp LT1. I'm going to purchase the B-cool drop in for the LT1 conversion. Similar to the standard 350 just with an extra heater coolant hose.

I'm currently running 2 electric fans with a custom enclosed shroud. Really good flow airflow.

The only problem I had with the Mepco was the core would get plugged with fine dirt when running in muddy water and then it would overheat and I would spend hours cleaning the fins.

The B-cool has only 2 main tubes which are wider than the Mepco for better cooling. It also has a wider fin spacing for less dirt entrapment and easier cleaning afterwards. The core is only slightly larger in the B-cool. Price is MUCH higher for the B-cool.

Jeeper,

Which Be Cool do you have.... universal? what size? or a conversion one?

Be cool is fawking expensive.

go for the Griffin for 181 bucks at summit.

I am looking for a radiator for my cj-7 to keep my Ford 5.0 cool.

I was thinking Griffin then decided to go for one from here.

Use a radiator from a 1992 Camaro, has to be one for a 5.7 V8. Its aluminum and only costs $120 or so. I use a MEPCO HD 3 core for my 350 V8 in my YJ. I hate it, going with the one stated above.

Thanks to those who replied.

Can't go wrong with a Griffin.....As said above $180 at summit. That's dirt cheap.. I have the 27.5x15 and it's supposed to be good for 400 hp....My electric fan rarely comes on. Just figure out what size limitations you have, and call summit. They have many universal sizes available.

I used a v8 rad/shroud from a 79 cj7. Just had to move the neck. Absolutely never runs hot.

I would go aluminum, the Be Cool is WAY expensive. You are much better off buying a universal and having some brackets built and welded on.

I would also suggest taking out the inner fenders if you can. That makes a huge difference in cooling. Or maybe having the hood louvered instead.

Also checking the idle fuel/air mixture to make sure it doesn't run lean.

Well, just to clarify, in no way will I ever buy one of the $550 Be Cool radiators, but the $269 universal is a possibility. If it isn't obvious, I don't have a lot of money to do this, so the Griffin looks like it will do...and do a fine job.

So, any tips on fabbing brackets?

Thanks,

Charly

So, do you think the 19 x 22" griffin will be big enough?

Much better fans can be had at a fraction of the cost. A good radiator will get you much further than a great fan.

This $20 junkyard fan will "Blow away" that black majic. 2 speed taurus fan.

I'm sure that it will more than enough. Call Griffin and talk to a tech. They are very helpful. They can tell you how many HP's the rad is good for. They'll even tell you local places that stock their product.

Adam,

How did you fit it in the grill? Can you post some pics?

Do you ever get into mud or dirty water. My copper brass was/is plugging whenever I splash through muddy water and then I overheat. Otherwise it's fine.
