I just picked up a 1992 chevy version of the NV4500 (6.34 1st gear ratio). I am building a rock buggy with a YJ frame and am seeking some information about driveline angles adapters, best tranfercase, etc. I am running a Ford HP Dana 44 up front (drivers side drop) and a Coporate 14 in the rear. I am doing a 4-link/quarter elliptic in the rear. Spring over up front. I know I need to possible change the output shaft to a dodge depending on which transfer case I get. I also have access to the orginal NP241 that came with the NV4500. Can I switch to a Chevy NP231 and use jeep parts on it (i.e. tail shaft short kit, 4:1)? The motor I'm using is a 4.3L chevy. Any ideas, thoughts, etc would help. Part numbers are also helpful, especially on the adapters. I've already called AA, but would appreciate help from this board (the best one out there).

I ran a Chevy NV4500 in my YJ for a little over a year. I used a chevy np241 with a JB conversions short shaft kit. I replaced the Chevy version with a Dodge version to gain the almost 2" of driveshaft length improvement about a year later. I then converted the Chevy 241 to a Dodge by swapping the front case half and the input shaft. All the Chevy parts and Dodge parts are interchangeable except the for the 241HD. The 241 and 231 are the same length. The 241 has the front output shaft about 1" farther away from the main shaft than the 231.
The Chevy version of the 241 I had has a flange style front output shaft. Pain in the butt for good driveshaft angles and can be swapped for the parts from a Dodge 241 with the standard 32 spline yoke available.
I had to use a 1" body lift to clear the 241 and the NV4500 and keep the skidd plate level with the bottom of the frame.
Good luck!

Can't help with anything specific about a YJ, but one hurdle you will have to decide on is which type of clutch/throwout bearing that you will need. The Chevy uses an internal mechanism, but you can use an external system that AA has. I have the external system and have just started using it this week. I am not real happy with it at this point. I can't adjust it to what AA says, ie, 1/16" free play at the bearing, and still get sufficient throw to release the clutch. Not exactly sure what I am going to do right now as I don't know if I am getting sufficient fluid displacement from my clutch master cylinder. Just something to think about.

Same problem with throwout bearing here. I bought the AA system with the CJ external slave cylinder. The slave is too large to get the approprite travel with the YJ master cylinder. Also the AA bell housing that I got had a core shift that made it impossible to tighten 2 of the bolts without remachining it.
I'm going to install a larger master cylinder to eliminate the problem. You will find that any larger master cylinder will interfere with the brake booster. I'm converting to the GM hydroboost setup to get the clearance. Not elegant but it will work.
Also the AA shift fork uses a little used throwout bearing and it's hard to find. I have to order them from the local race shop and it takes a week to get.

Hmmmmmmmmm, that's interesting about the throwout bearing. I just test fit my stock replacement throwout (it's a BCA, but can't remember the PN) on the fork AA sent with the BH I got (I have the early GM Nv4500) and it seem to fit fine.
I have a Luk clutch assembly i will be using.
What PN and brand throwout did you need to get to work with the AA suppilied shift fork (they state this is a stock GM fork)?
And figures, just my luck, I NOW hear about the clutch slave issue....AFTER I buy all this stuff....lol you guys are the first two I've heard of with this issue.

Nope, it's impossible to adapt a NV4500 to fit your buggy. What do you need an OD for anyway? Don't rockcrawlers get trailered everywhere? Hell at highway speeds they wander so much the driver crashes from fatigue. Better give that tranny to me, lest you hurt somebody with it.:flipoff2:

I'll dig out the part number tomorrow. I have a spare somewhere in my garage just in case.
