: opinion needed
warrbuk 04-23-2005, 07:05 PM Lets start by saying I don't know anything about Scouts. So here's the question. What is a 1963 IH scout half cab worth. I will assume that that it has a 4 banger and a 3 speed (I didn't look that closley). The body is sttraight and in pretty good shap, the paint is shot, needs brakes,
The drivers side door has a roll up/down window and the Pass. side is a sliding bypass type, was that normal for that year? I am looking at it as something my son and I could fix up together. So whats it worth and what are the good and bad points.
Thanks in advance
Mark
bchurch05 04-23-2005, 08:43 PM it think you are talking about the 800 if that is the case. 700 to 1000 if it has some rust but if it is a clean body with only surface rust than it is in my opinion probably worth about 1200$ that is assuming that it needs a good amount of work. one thing is that you have a engine that will accept any engine parts off the v8 models (304, 345, 392). those half cabs go for a good amount of money fixed up. i think it would be a great project for you and your boy. would have been cool to do something like that with my pop's.
pm Me if you have any more questions i will try to answer them.

Gen. Nonsense 04-23-2005, 10:02 PM The "How much is it worth" question will be continually debated, and you will never get a straight answer. My thought on buying anything with "International" on it for more than $500, is crazy. thats my 2 pennies
Hammerlock 04-23-2005, 11:03 PM It's impossible to give an accurate price without pictures. If you can't even figure out on your own how much it's worth I seriously doubt you have the skills to "fit it up". :shaking:

of course I just payed way more than that for one that is already "fixed up" to Pirate4x4 standards...
it is all about perception of the seller, and the corresponding clueless'ness of the buyer...

If you actually spend time with your kid, fixing up any old vehicle, and he learns something from the experience, other than "dad is an asshat," then the initial cost of the project is really not a concern, is it?
You'll spend four times as much fixing on it as what you first pay, so what does it really matter whether you pay $300 or $1000? "Worth" to me depends on availability, how bad you want it and how bad you "need" it. Does that help? :smokin:

corncrasher 04-24-2005, 02:03 PM They go from between free and $1000 in my area. Most of us scout owners seem to used to paying allmost nothing for our scouts.

'63 half cab... If it has a flat panel for a dashboard like a CJ, it is a model 80. If it has a padded dash with more that two guages it's an 800. A model 80 would have a 152, t-18, d-18, d-27 front and rear. Mine had 4.27 gears and a powerlock. The sliding window on the passenger side is factory, but it was only done for one year of production ('62) so it must have been swapped on. The folding windshield and removable make for fun nice weather driving. Rockers and floorpans tend to rust. There are two gas tanks, each in front of the rear wheels. They tend to collect a lot of dirt and crud and get rusty. New plastic tanks are available, but spendy. There is (or should be) a fuel tank selector switch on the floor between the door and driver's seat. Most questions can be answered at www.binderbulletin.org and click on FAQ.
I don't know how far you want to go in fixing it up, but there are plenty of parts around to get it back in running condition.

1961 for the sliding door window. first year of the scout... :D

Not to nitpick, but the model 80 Scouts had the T-90 (3 speed transmission), while the latter years had the T-18 (4 speed).
As for the value of the Scout--it's only worth as much as YOU are willing to pay for it. :p
My roommate spent over $2,000 in parts and labor fixing up a 1964 Scout 80 half cab that his Grandpa gave to him for free. I kept trying to talk him out of doing a "resto" rebuild on his Scout (I mean who would actually spend money fixing a Dana 27 axle?). In the end, he had a nice running STOCK 1964 Scout 80 (more of a tribute to his Grandpa than anything), but it was far from what he really wanted.
He was absolutely pissed when I bought my 1980 Scout II Diesel (in stock condition, no body damage and NO RUST) for less than he spent fixing his Scout. :shaking:

You are correct sir. I don't know why I typed t-18, maybe because I had one and sold it, or maybe because it is close to d-18. Maybe I just plain forgot.
Warrbuck, if you need parts, check the garage sale thread. I have a few motors, trannys, and t-cases.
