: 2.5L to 4.0L conversion problem
Animal 02-24-2002, 10:40 AM I am having some problem getting the motor mounts right on a engine conversion I am doing. I am trying to put a 4.0L HO engine from a 95' Cherokee into my 95' Wrangler, which had a 2.5L 4 banger. The problem I am having is that the after grinding the motor mounts from the frame and relocating them, the 6 cylinder doesn't seem wide enough to bolt up. The motor mounts off of the 2.5L are longer than the ones on the 4.0L.
Does anyone have any pictures of motor mounts out of a 4.0L or 4.2L 6 cylinder engine from a 89' and up. It doesn't matter if the pictures are of just the motor mounts of with them bolted onto the engine as long as they are visible.
I would also be interested to see if someone has any pictures of a bare Jeep frame from a vehicle that had a 6 cylinder in it. I am curious if the 2.5L weld-on mounts are smaller than the 4.0L.
All I know is that the passenger side bracket is shorter than the 2.5L be about 1.5". I understand that the 4.0L may be a little wider, but the motor mounts from the 6 are complete bias to one side where the 2.5L brackets are about the same size on both sides.
If anyone has done the conversion from a 2.5L to a 4.0L or 4.2L and has any pictures of this initial modification I would like to see the pictures...
Thanks in advance...

Skitzo 02-24-2002, 11:44 AM newbies aren't supposed to be doing engine swaps! what gives? :flipoff2:
Animal 02-24-2002, 12:30 PM Very Funny... And you're day job is :D :D :D :D :D
Skitzo 02-24-2002, 12:51 PM yeah, yeah.
btw, check your email.
i do know someone that may be of help - CMK. look him up on here and drop him an email. he's been doing a lot of stuff with fabbing motor mounts, and i bet he'd be interested in helping. just don't tell him you know me :D
thenodnarb 02-24-2002, 10:32 PM i plan on cutting and weling my brackets this weekend so any info on this would be appreciated. i heard moving the brackets 4 inches forward was correct. i've heard nothing of the brackets not being the right width.
Animal 02-25-2002, 12:14 AM I have a friend that has the exact same Jeep as mine except his is a 4.0L H.O. 6 cylinder. I went over to his house and measured the brackets from the frame edge to the center of the bolt on the motor mount. If I am correct, here is the information compared to my 2.5L mounts.
2.5L 4.0L
-----------------------------------------
PSide: 3" 4"
DSide: 5" 5.5"
I am going to a junk yard tomorrow to verify this from a vehicle where the frame is exposed and I can place the cut brackets from the 2.5L on the frame right next to the 4.0L. I think this would make sense though since when the 4.0L motor was mounted in place with the 2.5L brackets, both brackets would not meet flush with the frame and were short roughly 1.5". Not to mention that the motor would not sit level even if the mounts would sit flush.
If there is a difference I am going to grind the ones off of the frame from the junkyard and I'll be able to do some accurate measurements as well as post some pictures.
Again, the above measurements were rough as there was not much room to get an accurate reading with the engine in place on my friends Jeep.
More tomorrow.
Animal 02-25-2002, 10:04 AM I called a Jeep dealership and inquired about the difference between the 2.5L and 4.0L brackets. They are different between the two. They can be ordered from the dealer for about $44 each side. This would explain the problem I was having trying to mount the 6 cylinder with the 4 cylinder mounts.

thenodnarb 02-26-2002, 03:35 PM that makes sense. rather dissapointing. now I must come across some new brackets. I read an article on this swap before and it did not mention getting new brackets. it did mention that they needed to be moved. how do the brackets line up with hight wise. do you think there will be a problem with hood clearance?
Flip1YJ 02-26-2002, 06:34 PM Should be no prob with hood clearance, the tranny will stay in the same place and its what anchors the rear of the engine, so as long as you maintain the same clearance between the tranny and the floor, you'll end up with stock hood clearance for a 4.0L
Animal 02-26-2002, 10:42 PM Considering how high a Jeep hood sits in the first place I don't think there should be any problem.
As far as the motor mount towers I was forced to purchase new ones from the Jeep dealer today. It only set me back about $112 for the both of them.
I had also read several articles about the conversion and something was mentioned about needing to buy new ones, but this seemed to only be required because the person doing the conversion did not feel comfortable using the tower that had been ground off of the frame because he felt they were now trashed would compromise the strength.
I did this conversion also but on an 89. I found the same thing to be true. I cut off the old brackets, moved them forward as required and ended up lengthening the pass side bracket a couple inches, rather than purchase a new one.
