Ok couple of questions:
Are ALL 345ci heads fitted with the water hole in
them from the water pump 1" tubes?
I know that the UNimproved 392ci have the water
pump tubes going to the heads.
I know that the IMproved 392ci have the water
pump tubes going to the block just below the
heads.
I know you can put the 345 heads on the UNimproved
392ci.
Someone brought up the question about the 345ci heads being available in two types:
Unimproved cooling and Improved cooling.
I think that ALL 345ci heads were of the
UNimproved type like the UNimproved 392ci heads.
Any Gurus here that know for a FACT what the
REAL story is here.
thanks mucho

There have been RUMORS of improved-cooling 345's'... but know one I know (including a couple of IH engine builders) have seen any.
As with typical with IH, the general rule is NO there are no improved-cooling 345 heads..... HOWEVER, with IH, there is an exception to every rule, and there *may* have been a few made... but they are not common....

yes the 345 NEVER came in an IC
if your planing to drop in a 392 in your scout I whould not bother to do the head swap it's pleny powerfull enugh and you *mite* lose some of the bothem end tourqu with the higher compresion but that mite olny be whene you start tp play with cams

Thanks Guys for your replies.
Chief: I already have the 392ci in my ScoutII
but it isn't enough power at the bottom end.
More cr=more off the line accel/bottom end.
Thats why I want to use the 345 heads. Also the 345's valves/ports are smaller which also gives more bottom end because of more port velocity at low rpm.
Again, thanks mucho for confirming what I thought.

The 345 heads should yield better low end numbers from the smaller ports.. but the 392 would flow better at higher RPM. :D
While you're at it, shave the block to up the compression, too.
Then port the heads and shave them just a little.
you'll get more CR increase from .040 off the block than you will from .040 off the heads.
What cam are you running?

Tom, I doubt he wants to take his shortblock apart so he can cut .040" off the deck :D, but you're right, it'd be more effective there, of course.
However, you hit it on the head (pardon the pun) with the bumpstick. What the hell cam are you running, ScoutII, that a 392 doesn't have enough low end????? If stock or small cam, what gear/tire combo? Even my tired 345 with a medium (read: non-lowend)Isky cam, 35's, and 3.54's will break traction with a blip of the throttle, right of idle, in 1st (close 4spd). What's the trouble?:flipoff2:

I agree....never have i seen a 392 without enough low end
mine bursts the mud out of the tread with the tiniest of throttle.
what kinda set up are you running?
exhaust?
carb?
cam?
timing?
love my jacobs ignition!!!!!<adds snort!!!!
