a friend of mine has 87 land cruiser with the stock 4 speed and it is going out. i was wondering if it is at all possible to swap in a w56 and truck xcase.

are there kits or would it be a total custom job?

You would have to make a bellhousing. Sounds like way more work than it worth. By the time you got it all figgured out you could have had a NV4500 or H55F in and driving.
