: For those who have made their own hi-steer arms

I'm in the middle of doing a Toyota axle swap and want to go hi-steer at the same time (but not spend the $$$$). I stumbled upon what looks like the perfect raw material....a bumper mount trailer hitch. 3/4 thick x 2 1/2 wide with a 3/4 inch step up towards the ends. I was thinking about cutting the stock arms off and welding new arms to the Toyota mounting base. What do you think?

How far from the king pin should the drag link mount tie rod hole be?

I have heard people talk about using 3/4 ton tie rod ends. What is the thread size for the drag link ( 3/4 16 or something else)? What taper do they use?

Be careful with some of that prebent bolt on hitch stuff.
Some of them are made from some strange alloy for rust prevention that does not take welds to well. Try cutting it with a torch first, if it cuts clean it may be ok but if you cant get a clean cut, toss it and buy some good material.

is there any way you can drill and bolt on the stuff instead of having to weld it? if there's any question of welds failing, you may want to consider using fasteners instead, if possible?

If you just want to buy the arms and fabricate the rest yourself, it probably wouldn't be too[ bad... There's quite a few companies out there making Toy steering stuff: All Pro, Marlin Crawler, OOT, and the newest one is Kong's 4x4 in Phoenix.

I ended up getting their stuff for my Toy's solid axle swap... it's hella beefy. I'm pretty sure Mark would sell you just the arms, too. I paid $550 for the whole system, whic is pretty much average. The bonus here is that it uses Chevy tierod ends, which would be easy to find the taps to make your own draglink/tierod for, I would think...

Anway, here's a pic:
