i had them side by side just figured id shoot a pic for yah. the d60 is a 79 and the 10.25 is a 90. the 10.25 is bigger in everyway. the top of the axle is actually the bottom in the pic

most later model F350s had/have them as a rear axle. anybody know what they have got for shafts though? i know the carrier is ultra-beef, but i dunno about the shafts.

F-250 and F-350 from the mid-80's on up. good axle if a bit on the heavy side.

Sterling 10.25 uses 1.5" 35 spline shafts. Full float and semi float versions exist.

nice... i assume that the full float ones are more common and are on the majority of the 350s i see runnin around with the huge drive flange assy?

Their only downfall IIRC is lack of gearing and differential options.

Sterling 10.25s are great axles, too bad you can't get gears lower than 4.56 for them

you can get detroits, ARB's, and several limited slips, I'm considering putting a detroit in my tow rig, as single tire starts get kinda hard at times, at a quick glance I couldn't find deeper than 4.56 gears though, although with the popularity of the big fords it may well change in the future...

yjtj,

while you have them side by side, could you measure the distance between the centerline of the tube to the bottom of the diff housing on each and post?

Thanks

if you look into them more you will find out you can get 7.17 from ford and randys r and p is now making 5.38 for them with more gearing options to come. ill get them measurements for yah tomorrow when the sun comes back out.

and some of the 10.25 have disc from the factory...I know my bosses 2001 F350 V10 Lariat does...FWIW

2001 actually has what is called a sterling 10.5. as the ring gear is bigger than the old ring gear by you guessed it .25 inch. but you can swap the gears between the 2 axles as long as you use the r and p together. for example you can put the 4.10 10.25 gears in the 10.5 as long as you swap in both the r and p from the 10.25. heres a thread showing you how to put discs on the 10.25, its my thread, i like this axle

the d60 measures 6 inches from axle centerline to the bottom of the diff. the 10.25 measures about 6 3/8. looks like yah can shave it alot though, this will be my next project.

I threw a 10.25" with 4.56s under my 95 Bronco after breaking my factory 8.8". I was only running mud with the Bronco at the time and left the factory posi unit in... So far no breakage.... doubt it will break.... certainly a huge axle... only problem I have heard of is a shorter life span than Dana 60s,70s, etc, but that would be under normal use conditions (1-ton and a bunch of miles).

AFAIK, the semi float is a 9.5 inch or so ring gear, and comes on the heavy duty F150, 97 up, and the light duty f250 97 up.

i will say those 10.25 are tuff as hell i have one in a 88 f350 diesel with 190k and i have only changed the gear oil once in it, i am lazy. i have beat the crap out of it and towed every thing possible so that is my .02 cents and i see them all the time in wreking yards. and the semi came in 250's and they are also cclip axles storm:trooper:

Wow, a bunch of fawkin Jeepers here or something. :flipoff2: At least YJTJ is on the right track. The 10.25 is not made by Sterling, it's Ford corporate. It's like asking who makes a 14 bolt (watch some smartass say AAM). Sterling is to the 10.25 what "Windsor" is to the 351W. They came under most '86-current F250s and 350s. Semi-float versions were avail on some LD F250s but not real common. Anyway, the full floaters are 35 spline, 1.5" shafts. As for being heavy I guarantee you they're lighter than a 14 bolt. This IS Ford's version of a 14 bolt or D70. People love to say that 4.56 is the lowest ratio avail, but I'm currently sitting about 4 feet away from a set of 5.38s for this axle (made by Yukon Gear, Randy's R&P - as already stated by YJTJ). Motive and Superior are supposedly pursuing 5.13 and 4.88 respectively. Yes, later models are technically a 10.5, and should be disc-equipped but metric wheel bolt pattern. Otherwise the brakes are 12x3" drums and the drums slide right off once you remove the wheel.
I guess no one ever bothers to look under the thousands of '86+ F250s and 350s on the road today, but this is a great axle - but there is no question that there's currently more aftermarket support of D60s and 14 bolts.
