: Cracked front transfercase output housing

This weekend at the Jambo in Johnson Valley I Cracked my front output housing on the 3 speed transfercase. I really dont know how it happened or when, but It started making some nasty noises. My question is, what normally cases this to happen, so I can prevent it in the future. I was not on the peddle hard either.

Also does anyone happen to have a front housing laying around that they would like to get rid of. Any help would be great

Thanks
CAcy

ThAT would be it. It is where the selector for 4x4 and 4x2 is. It cracked around the bolts. Let me know what you want for it.

Thanks Again

Any chance you are running a monster thick or square front drive shaft? This will do it. A drive shaft mega built will not give so it does like anything else built up it transfers the braking point.

Sorry no nose cones, I have a complete 73' t-case ($375) but not just a nose cone.

No its a stock thick front shaft. I had a probem with my tranny a while back. I had a sm465 rebuilt by a shop and they left some sort of nut that keeps the output shaft from moving. Because of this, the bolt that holds the transfer case gear onto the tranny output shaft kept coming out. The tranny finally took a crap after a year and I had to have it complely rebuilt. I am wondering if the vibration and movenemment of the shaft could have caused this.

that failure is not uncommon. it's due to the gears trying to push away from each other under heavy loads and will occur over time. a lot of times the cone will crack and get worse and worse until it starts to leak severely and/or seperate all the way.

i thought you were so broke that you could'nt afford the red star but you made it to JV, huh?! :flipoff2: at least you have your priorities right!!!!!

i have a cone as well if matt's does'nt work out for some reason. :)

I am broke, the only way I made it down was becasue my dad and brother went and towed mine down there. I dodnt have to pay. I am going to be getting a red star pretty soon.

Yep. Been there, done that. I did this when I dragged my square shaft on a rock ledge on Fordyce a couple years ago. Look familiar?

Oh I know and I can take it. If I am going to post with the big boys, then I am ready to take some crap. I wish I could get rid of the case a go with something stronger. Het Orange Isabel is looking great.

Do you have a shackle reversal?? If so, is your driveshaft too long to collapse all the way?? That is a fine way to blow up a front output.

Look anything like this :D
Did that once right before last years roundup. Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters saved my ass with a spare case.
