Found a 3/4ton rolling chassis for $400. It has a FF 14 in the back and 8 lug 44 in the front. (the sides of the diff. cover are flat, not round like a 10 bolt and it has a 44 mark in the casting) The passenger side nuckle is flat. The hubs are old spicer units but one of them is thrashed externally. Guy says its a 79-81 truck but wasn't for sure
If my goal is 44/14 under my CJ7, does this price seem right considering that I will have to get the nuckle drilled and taped for studs etc.? New hubs, complete replacement of seals and bearings. Recondition the breaks.. Paint the housing Labia Red... ;) etc..
Hell, I'm going to have to do this stuff with any axle I get, was just wondering if I hadn't considered something... Truck only has 45000 miles on it but has been sitting out.
Thanks
Matt

Sounds like an alright deal...14 bolts you can normally pick them up for $150-$300(or more depending if they have already been geared and locked) and the 8 lug 44 is prolly about $200 or more...I would say get it because you know they are a matching set...FWIW

did he say what gear ratio? If it is a 79 it has an odd feont axle with a d44. There is nothing wrong with 10bolts except gear selection, and the axles cant be narrowed or resplined. It sounds like a good deal if you are planning on running full width. I just bought a cab and chassis 14bolt with a 63in wms to wms and I have a narrowtrack waggoneer front with 8lug outer knuckles at 63in wms to wms. The benefit is I use all stock parts and the c&c 14bolt uses the same axle as a single wheel rig as well. If you are going full width I would buy the set.

I completely forgot to ask about gear ratio. The way I have been figuring things, 4.09/4.10 is just about right for a jeep that will have to get to the trails with only a 1:1 tranny and 36inch tires.
Any problems leaving the tierod in the stock location and just getting the passenger nuckle setup for the crossover draglink?
Thanks. I think I'm gonna do it even though I can't really afford it. hehe:rasta:
If you end up not getting it, let me know. I'm in Nacogdoches and could use the D44/14B.

are you planning on goin bigger than 36?....
with that 14 b your goin to have zero clearance and it weighs a ton.
just something to think about..... big is nice..but there is a thing called overkill.

I would leave the tierod in the stock spot and yes do the pass. hysteer arm to the draglink. good system. I did minimal clearancing on my 14b and ended up with the same as an unclearanced dana 60, so its ok with 36s IMO.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'm going to go ahead and get it. It sounds at least like a good place for me to start the whole upgrade project.
Thanks
