What do you think, would you go with a 9 inch 60 hybrid or just a reverse cut 60 for the front. Im gonna put diff on the passenger side so either way its gonna have to be built. I like the strength of the 60 but clearance of the 9inch.

I went through this same delima for my CJ. Since I already had a 35 spline 9" rear, the 9" 60 hybrid sounded good. I finally decided to just go with the front RC 60, and swap the rear out for a 14bolt. Of course finding a RC 60 for $158 made that decision a bit easier

sure, but it would run backwards <g>

I knew I guy that made a Ford p/u 4X6 with dual powered 9"ers in the rear. To drive the rear axle he mounted an upside down 3rd in the rear of the first... worked good and oil just fine.

Some people may know they guy, Tom Leblanc (sp), "Captain America" at the NW Rockcrawl, and winner of the last 2.

Good, guy, scored some killer alxe deals off him....

why would you want to do a 9in? first of all Ford never put the 9 inch in anything bigger than a 1/2 ton truck. they bought axles from Dana and put Dana 60s in all their 3/4 ton trucks. . dose that tell you anythiong about a 9 inch???

Do the RC60 and shave it.

I think Mossberg has a deep hate for ford 9"s that stems from his time in prison... any time someone says 9"s he cringes and starts spluttering about how 9" of cock... I mean axles... are the worst in the world. truth be told... 9" are lighter and can be made stronger than any D60, 70, or 80...not to mention if shaved they offer MUCH more ground clearance than the above options. And shaving a 9" ISN'T hard or expensive... hell it gives more clearance tha a damn D44... The D60 hybrids you're talking about FJ cruiser actually use a nodular center section and 35 spline axleshafts. I watched the guys from Fort Worth run them pretty hard all weekend with up to 38.5" tires and VERY healthy motors... in Cruces... I think they're a good purchase.

)I was debating this same thing before I finally decided to go RC60 in the front. For me, it wasn't about the strength of the 9",(It's plenty strong;) ) it was the 8.8 RC 9" option that scared me. With a 60, you can shave it and have the best of both worlds. High clearance and strong ring gear/carrier

i am just telling the truth. Ford only used the 9 in little 1/2 ton apps. then they called upon DANA for a 60 in their real trucks. enough said. i think you just like boasting about your nine inch because you really only have a three inch!:flipoff2:

Mossburg you are wrong, Ford installed 9" axles in their 3/4 ton vans. :flipoff2:

That said, my 35 spline Nodular 9" center section is Awesome! I did the hybrid and I so wish someone would come up with a TRUE RC 9" (not the Currie 8.8) so I could put one in the rear of my Cruiser.

I HATE the RC D60's clearance on my Cruiser. That damn thing drags on EVERYTHING!!!

I say do the Hybrid. WIth my 38.5's at 5lbs I have 12" of clearance under the 9" and 10" under the RC D60.

That is the difference between 38" tires and 42" tires to gain that much clearance!

after some soul searching i was not able to find one good reason to build my new axles from a 9" center section. i used the tera 60 housing.

Sure, don't blame you. I think that is the best alternative...just lots of $$$.

Depending on what tranny you have you might have to worry about being able to have the driveshaft over far enough to the pass side.

Money no option. I would wait a few months till I could get my hands on the new round bottom Tera 60 housing. Those are going to be sweet. Build the spring pad as tight on the housing as I could. If your in a rush you could use the existing Tera housing :D

I was also thinking about this, but i don't want to give myself any extra work, adding a 60 front will take a enough time add to teh the jigs and the other junk you need for the 60/9 and you have more $$$ and more time, its a great setup, just has to much invloved with getting it done

Dude,
The 9"/60 combo wpould be your best bet, it's lighter, available with 35 spline axles, wide variety of R&P's up to 7.0:1
