I need a tow rig and I dont have much cash. My dad will give me his 87 FJ60 Landcruiser and I am wondering if this will tow the scout. If I get it I will do a Chevy swap with a 383 and a TH400 or 700-R4. Will this be a safe tow rig for long distances?

I'm not really familiar with that rig but you might want to venture over to the Toyota forum and ask there.

Are you going to put some bigger brakes and stiffer springs and longer wheelbase on it too? On a tow rig engine power is no where near as important as good brakes, good tires, and stability. Sell the cruiser and buy a fullsize pickup or van, 3/4 ton preferred.

That Lcruiser wheel base is too short. Try to get a cheap F-150 at least.

if i needed a tow rig i would go diesel truck and do a rear disc brake conversion.

Heavy duty brakes, and wheelbase are what make a tow rig.
The Scout isn't a light rig either.
Sell the FJ and get a long-bed travelette.

I don't think I would do it for long distances. I tow my Scout behind my 96 3/4 ton suburban, I wouldn't want to tow with anything smaller. Power isn't the concern, it's the braking. If you have to use the FJ60, I would upgrade to brakes on both axles of your trailer.

If you're going to put it on a trailer then be sure your trailer has brakes and get yourself a good brake controller. I tow my scout with my 01 expedition with trailer brakes and it stops great. I doubt your rear springs will support the tounge weight you need though. Actually, the more I think about it, the less I like the idea. I'm betting your tranny would hate all that weight back there and I'm not so sure that it is stable enough to control sway.
Find yourself an old suburban and don't worry about rear discs. Just get a trailer with brakes and a good brake controller. suburban's are great tow rigs because they have such a long wheel base. I love them.
