: fuel pump questions for 5.0 in jeep

So i have been through two pumps in the past year and want to know what is going on.

let me update you on the setup: comming out of tank i have a car quest special lift fuel pump that runs into a pusher pump (holly) hi psi to the ford 5.0. the one acting up is the lift pump.

The first question is am i asking to much for that pump to lift fuel from tha tank? should i go with a in the tank pump? (not a big fan of this due to on trail repair). should i get a different pump, higher quality.

Placement? i now run 12 inches of tube from top of tank into the lift pump then 18 inches to the pusher pump. both pumps are located about 3 inches lower than the top of the tank.

any ideas?

My suggestion would be to ditch the aftermarket pumps and run a fuel pump from a 5.0 EFI Ford pickup. They are frame mounted and should match your engine requirements perfectly. I don't think the placement is critical, just mount it as close to the tank as possible.

does the ford pick up use to two pump system like the cars. the mustangs have the lift pump in the tank and pusher on the frame. are the truck different?

The truck pumps are more of a pusher style. I was only going to run the f150 pump when i was getting ready to do my 5.0 conversion. I hear its hard to prime it with one pump but once the fuel starts flowing then it works fine. You may want to try it.

The only Mustangs that use two pumps (that I know of) are the turbo 4cyl ones like the SVO. The reason they do this is because the fuel pressure is higher since the fuel pressure must overcome the boost pressure. My '87 5.0L Mustang just has the one in the tank. The trucks just use one and it's mounted on the frame at least on trucks with dual tanks. They did it that way so they only needed one pump rather than one in each tank.

only early cars have 2 - mine had just one in the tank and as it sits in my truck that is all I have..

I ran 3/8" line but just the in tank pump and an in-line filter

I use an aftermarket BBK pump, set up in the tank. The 5.0 HO Car engines all came from Ford with an "In the Tank", set up. The stock In Tank pumps for the Mustangs, will adapt very easily onto the Late YJ tanks (20 gallon plastic), and sending units.
When I raised my fuel tank, I fabricated an access panel, above the sending unit, into the new bed, above the tank, (I have a spare pump, mounted inside the access panel). I can change out a pump in about 10 minutes.
I used 3/8" line for both the supply and return.
I havent had any problems with this set up, since I installed it about a year ago.

I am using the factory Mustang pump in the tank {I have aslo made an access hole in the tub that is covered by sheetmetal for easy trail repairs. I had to pull the fuel lines two times last year on the Rubicon and I was real happy that I had that access hole. Hope this helps. Doug

I have been pondering this tank here.

http://www.trailquest.com/Jeep_tanks/rockcrawler.shtml

It is baffled. It is a little larger then stock and it is beefy.
I am raising my gas tank up about 4-6 inches and I think that this would be a good alternative to a fuel cell since this thank should pass the referee inspection.

Drop in an intake pump and the whole deal should work fine.

Oh and I'm swapping a 5.0 into my CJ-7.

Try 1990 or so. Just make sure it's for an EFI engine.

The spec for the EFI truck pump is 35-45 psi.

Keep the 4-8 PSI pump on the tank, then get a frame rail mount one from a bronco/f-150/f250 from the pick and pull, after market ones suck, get that and you'll be good to go

I have been using for a similar application, an 4.0 swap, a pump from an '89 F150 w/5.0. An E2000. $79 from Autozone, w/ a lifetime warranty. I am using the filter also. But only a single pump. No troubles.:D

one pump in the tank, why run more?

the bronco doesn't come stock with a frame rail pump. i have the stock in tank which is around 30-35psi and a frame rail pusher from Vortech which gets me around 70psi @ 6# boost. this is not the t-rex pump but just the one that come with the supercharger kit. i believe it is around $70 from Vortech. fyi i tried two repacement mustang in-tank 110lph pumps (forgot the brand) from Hawaii Racing and they both failed within a week:mad:. so i went back to the stock bronco in tank $125 junk yard $250 ford:eek:. this pissed me of because i had modified (distroyed) my original to use the mustang unit. i heard the higher lph mustang unit was more reliable and the problems were with the 110lph

The Bronc does have a frame pump standard!
yup todd we got the right one, depending on where you mount it you might need a low PSI pump

the years are what ever had EFI, bronco' and f-150 had EFI in 86 for 302 and 87/88 for 351, all the years are different just go to pick and pull and look on the driver side frame for some

one of my friends eb's is running a 89 5.0, he thought he needed two pumps, so he put them in, and I don't think he ever turns on the first pump (one sucking the gas out of the tank) and don't ask me why he put them both on toggle switches, guess he likes the things

mine is a '92 5.8 and the fame rail pump was not there from the factory. trust me i wired it in. it also took a jumper hose from the end of the fuel filter to the pump. i have know idea what came on the 5.0 trucks so your more than likely right with concerns to those and 5.8 trucks since the tanks are diferent.

No! This mounts on the frame. If it good enough for Ford, than it's good enough for me.:D
