Hey guys,

I was wondering if you may be able to point me to the right direction. What i'm looking for is some info and parts. I am trying to get some bearings to rebuild my 1ton HO72 eaton rear.

1. Does anyone know where I can source the bearings I need to do this? I would like to replace everything in the carrier as well as the pinion. Then do the hub bearings as well. Does anyone sell a kit with all of the required bearings? Or maybe have some old part numbers so I can have my bearing shop cross ref them and find possible replacements....

2. I have seen some off roaders remove the drums and adapt bolt on 14 bolt disc brake brakets and run '75 chevy 3/4ton front brake hardware on the rear. Anyone done this?

3. The axle I have has a factory detriot locker, since I plan on swaping my carrier and shafts for 14bolt internals (only because of ease of replacement if something does go south) what is the going rate for one of these detroits. I know they kinda rare.

4. Does anyone have access to any shop manuals for this axle? I'd love to maybe get a hold of any info possible.

BTW: anyone have a set of 5.13 gears they'd want to part with?

Thanks guys!

There's a ton of info on Eatons on the Gen4x4 board, including info on tapered bearings.

There are early '60-67 and late '68-up versions, the difference is in the front pinion brg.
2-KD11786Y--case brgs
1-M5205EL--pinion rear
1=A1011--earlypinion frt/or 1-5310WA---late
1 411330N Seal
All BCA Numbers

Note--5310WA is a double row ball brg and A1011 is a taper brg assembly. easy to tell just pull front retainer.

I used the AA-Mfg weld on brake brackets for mine, 1/2 ton chevy calipers, and any 4wd 8 lug rotor.

Are your bearings pitted? Are they bad? There is no need to replace them if they are not worn, you won't wear them out.

I've seen the lockers go for about $150. A complete third member with 5.13's and a detroit went for $300 here a few years back.

grljeeper: Thanks for that reply that is beyon excellent info and i'm glad we have all of that in a thread now.

Reguarding the double row ball vs the taper, i read somewhere that there is a replacement taper bearing for the double row ball bearing because of the cost of that one. Do you know anything about that.

It appears as if www.rockauto.com lists all of the above parts in their online catalog, but they did not show prices for the either pinion bearings.

again, thanks!

I dont know if the bearings are bad or not, but the guy I was speaking to about swaping in some 5.13's said that the bearings may get damaged during removal. If the axle was geared to 4.56 I could live with it as is, but its 4.10 which is just a bit too low for what i'm looking at doing right now. I guess I could just build a crawl box and live with it ; )

Don't know about a taper replacemnt for the double row ball set up, but I do know that either way they are $$$$$$. And they are the only ones that could get damaged in a ratio change. Some time in the timken and bca spec books could yield a solution. If you proceed take heed of the possible shims under the outer pinion brg. DO NOT LOOSE THEM!

GRLJEEPER: Just wondering where you got your info on the front pinion bearings? From everything i've dug up it looks like A1011 is the pinion bearing for HO52s and HO72s and the 5310WA is the front pinion bearing for the H110.

Its kinda fun digging up parts for these axles, kinda like a fawking treasure hunt. Federal Mogul has a pretty cool part lookup on their site, but they only show model year 68+ on there.
