: MT/R or BFG km
cjhunter 02-25-2002, 12:25 AM I am in need of some new rubber fo my 79 CJ, I am looking at the BFG km and the MT/Rs. I need a tire that will wear well, I cant afford a new set every year. The jeep is not my daily driver, but it does see about 50% on road use. The other half is a mix between mud, dirt, rocks and sand. With mud being the most frequent. I dont want to go too aggressive, like a tsl or bogger, so I thought these would be good.
Which will do better in the mud and which will last longer?
How many miles can I expect out of either? ( I know it depends on driving style, conditions, etc., but say I wa s to drive strictly on pavement, about how many can I expect.
thanks
Military Jeeper 02-25-2002, 02:57 AM First off you are asking this ? on the wrong board.......so get ready for the @SS chewings. :mad3:
MT/R's wear well and do well off-road............I have owned them. Can't speak on behalf of the new BFG's though.

RCKRATZ 02-25-2002, 12:35 PM go with the mt/r's
mtadams 02-25-2002, 01:11 PM Look into BFG MTs if you drive it on the street alot. They last longer than MT/Rs and are still decent on rocks, mud, etc.

borton 02-25-2002, 01:34 PM after seeing the bfg ko's in competition in st george, and talking to Bob Roggy, who has run them both, I'd go with the BFG ko's, don't know how they compair on the road to mt/r's tho, but I'm not that impressed with the mt/r's life on the road.
mfg4rox 02-25-2002, 02:33 PM I have a set of 33 inch MTRs and they are lasting me longer than my SSRs or my BFG muds ever did. The SSRs worked better on the rocks though!
cjhunter 02-25-2002, 03:39 PM Thanks fo rhte replies.
I am very tempted to go with the BFGs because they have been around for ever, and tons of people run them, so I know they will work. And I have had them before and they wear great, but those were the old style. I wonder how much better the new ones are compared to the old stlye?
Even thought I am tempted, I think I am going to try the MT/Rs, they seem like a very cool tire. I might as well try something new.
thanks agian

TODDK 02-25-2002, 03:59 PM screw both buy a real set of tires...........
interco!!!!
need I say more?????
If you need some kind of wear get the radials.....
Mr.RatBastard 02-25-2002, 03:59 PM BFG's have a stronger sidewall and a mag. test I read showed the MTR's having a very soft tread compound ( i would imagine this equals shorter street life ) I have run BFG's not great anywhere but not bad anywhere either.I have not run MTR's
RCKRATZ 02-25-2002, 04:10 PM get procomps:D
cjhunter 02-25-2002, 05:16 PM Mr.RatBastard
You are saying the BFGs have a stronger sidewall? I have seen tons of people on the trail with side wall punctures that were running the BRGs, are you talking baout the old style mudders or the KMs? I thought that I heard that the great thing about the MT/R was the side wall strength?
I hope you are wrong about the MT/Rs, because I just ordered a set.
thanks for the reply anyway

BadAZYj 02-25-2002, 05:54 PM I currently Have the BFG's two are Km's and two are the old style. Why are they mixed and matched you ask? Because I have cut three in the past month:eek: Two old style and One KM. The KM's have the EXACT same sidewall as the old ones. I wheel hard on the rocks every weekend and there are 7 guys in my group, 4 run MT/Rs and 3 run BFG's The only one that have cut sidewalls lately are the ones with the BFG's. So I am going to get some 35" MT/R's next month and hopefully I wont have to make a trip to discount every week:D HTH:flipoff2:
My MTR's were the first set of 5 to last more than a year.
interco.... Sidewall failure
BFG Side wall failures many... many
Youll like the Goodyear's Or take them back and complain. They will help you out if you complain loud enough..
Goodyears like low tire pressure.. I run my 35x12.5 r 15's at 8psi on non-beadlocked rims and have not cut a sidewall or poped a bead yet..
On road, smooth and quiet,
On snow,,, FANTASTIC best tire yet on snow/ice
on mud-- Very impressive, Swampers are better, but you dont want swampers so out of BFG and MTR about equal in mud.
Just run them low on air in the woods, 25-30 psi on road.
Ask your Goodyear Dealer for stickers and see if they can assist on the cost, IE: Sponser you for advsertising You have to run white letters out.... But if it saves $$$ its worth it. Get a hat too!
Mr.RatBastard 02-25-2002, 06:25 PM I based what I said on what I had heard about the old mt's and what I thought I read but...I reread the article on mtr's...sorry peoples...it was talking about the old mt's and the new ones at the same time ,it says "old sidewall as thick as saran wrap"...new ones are three ply (like the BFG's) I have run several sets of BFG's and no problems. And for anybody interested they used a durometer ( the higher the # the harder the compound ) BFG's =64...MTR's=52... SX's=58...claw radial=62...claw bias=68....pro comp's=66...may be not mean a lot .I am sure the different tread patterns have a big effect on longevity and stickiness .
RockyXJ 02-25-2002, 07:19 PM I always thought MT/R's have stronger sidewalls, aren't they more of a rockcrawling tire than the BFG. Both will wear well on the street, but i have heard that the BFG's will wear slightly better if siped. I think both are pretty much equal other than the MT/R's are a little more pricey, but if you want a true offroad tire, go interco.
RalphWiggum 03-01-2002, 08:01 AM Buy BFG A/t's and run them at 28psi for trolling to the bathhouses but air up to 32psi for those long trips to the Keys.
