Ive never delt with Jeeps before and the search feature isnt working. Its a 5 speed and it needs a rebuild or replacement if I can score a cheap tranny.

Thanks

Its a carb engine :gay:

Yeah, what he said. Don't waste your time rebuilding it, find a different model to swap in there.

The AX15 is generally an easy swap, however you'll need to do something about the transfer case...the BA10/5 has a 21-spline output to the case, and the AX15 has a 23-spline.

If you find an AX15 that works, it'll bolt right up, and all the clutch hardware should work if the AX15 is a pre-94 model. AX15's of that earlier vintage (90-93) used an internal slave, same as the Peugeot, and later ones have it externally.

Of course, you didn't mention if you had a 4 or 6 cyl...4 cylinder would have the AX-5 transmission, which is better, but still not great. If you have one of those, do a search here and find the guy who swapped in a AX15 behind the 4-cylinder using a Dodge Dakota bellhousing and some other hardware.

Damm this hella :rainbow:

Ok so I need to find a 90-93 AX-15 w/ internal slave. That should be ok then. What do I do about the T-case??? Do I try to find a complete tranny/T-case combo and call it good. Will the X-member bolt back up or am I gonna have to do some serious fab work with the X-member, driveline, shifters, ect.

This is Daily Driver 6 cyl.

Thanks for the help with this POS Jeep. What was DC thinking when they built the POS's :)

Your lucky day!! I have an 89 wrangler that I just pulled the peugot trans out of. This one worked just fine before the swap to a t-18. I checked on Ebay and the going rate for them without shipping is about $200. I'll sell you the one I have for $150 and it'll bolt in without any hassles. :D

Easiest option is to get the one mentioned above.

If you decide to swap for an AX15, the crossmember should work fine. You'll need to get the t-case linkage piece that butts up against the trans, or you can get the universal kit that Novak Conversions offers. The easiest thing as far as the t-case is to just get a matched set when you find the tranny, but if the one you have is in decent shape, it's not the worst thing ever just to swap out the input gear...Novak also sells those to do whatever you need, just tell 'em the year and stuff and they'll get you the right one.

All the levers on the inside should poke out in the same spot. I'm going off my recollection of doing this in an XJ, so some stuff might not be exactly the same on a YJ...like you said, this stuff is pretty :rainbow: sometimes.

I ran a Peugeot trans in my XJ for about 3 months - I converted the XJ from 2wd, and I got the trans and t-case for free, so I figured I'd put it in and see what happened. Within a month, 5th gear lost a few teeth, and made a nice clinking noise going down the road. Shortly after that, the shift gate disappeared, and I had to reach in through the top with a screwdriver for a while until it magically came back. Then all the synchros exploded. Then fifth gear disappeared completely, then 4th. Then I bought a rebuilt, warrantied AX15/NP231 combo and haven't had any problems since.

The Peugeot works alright when it's in good shape, but as soon as shit starts to go wrong... :nuke: It's not very strong even in its best form. If you've got big plans for this jeep then I'd start considering other options.

Thanks for the info vette boy. Yeah the AX-10 lost 5 gear so its done.

This Jeep sucks. Are most Jeeps this :rainbow: I cant believe its an 89 and still doesnt have EFI. Were there alot of recalls on these years. God help anybody that would want to get serious with a Jeep this year, they would have to replace everything except the tub.

Thanks again.

P.S should I be a nice friend and attempt to do this swap for my buddy or is it going to be a big can of worms littered with little :rainbow: parts that will break, strip, and fall apart on me. :)

When bought this 89 I didn't know anything about Jeeps. I've replaced all the crappy components with good stuff. I just did the Motorcraft 2100 carb swap and it runs alot better on the trail. EFI would be the best but lots of $$$

Not all were created equal. The 21 spline was only used in the 4cyl IIRC

21-splines came with all 4-cylinders, also the Peugeot trans, and all autos before the 4.0 HO came out. The AX15 always had a 23-spline though.

The Motorcraft 2100 is a decent swap, probably worth doing.

Up through '90 is when they were still carbureted...for whatever reason the '87-90 XJ's got the EFI 4.0, but the carb'd 4.2 continued in the YJ's. '91 is generally considered the coolest year of the YJ because you could get it with the 4.0 HO motor, but it was the last year of the CJ-style roll cage with the diagonal rear bar...the only year with that combo of motor and cage. After 91 they changed it due to a rear shoulder seatbelt requirement.

You'll also find a Dana 35 axle out back, don't have much to work with there either...

It's not that hard to throw an AMC V8 in there, most of the frame and such is identical to a CJ. You'd just need to find a proper driveline that could handle it.

If you decide to do the swap I have a good 23 spline transfer case I don't need any more, drop me an e-mail if you want it, I'd like $100 for it. I am below Sac, but can meet somewhere. calmarkid2002@yahoo.com

89 was the year that jeep swaped from the BA/10 to the AX-15, so some have the BA/10 and some have the AX-15

here is a way to ID both trannys.

AX-15, aluminum case, split front to back with an intermediate plate.

BA/10, aluminum case, split left and right.

What do you mean by split left/right?

if you're lying under it, there is a left half and a right half to the case.

TFI does nearly the same thing and is around 100 bucks.
