I've seen this discussed in the Heep forum before. I've been contemplating buying a narrow track Heep I found. Would the upgrade to Toy 8" axles be much of a strength increase over the stock 30/20 if I were to just run the stock 258 with 35-36" tires (whatever I find first) and 4.56 gears? I know it's an easy swap but is it worth the time?

I guess an obvious advantage is flap top knuckles for crossover.

the toy axles are going to be much stronger with a large backing in the after market also...just check out the toy/runner forum. the dana 30/20 were not strong axles and if you are running a 35/36 in tire then you will surely break..and break often. most everyone runs the stock toy rear with no upgrades to shafts or r&p. the weak point of the front is going to be the birfield joints...but with bobby long putting more and more great stuff together you can have a front axle that will compare with a d44 and be lighter...might be stronger w/ 30spline birfs and 4340 chromo inners from poly performance

thats the way to screw the heep axles too... :flipoff2:

if i were you i would get a samurai and swap the toy stuff under it

The thought has crossed my mind. The reason I like the Toy axle idea is it's a pretty close to direct swap, and will give me more or less a lighter D44 strength wise with better ground clearance like you said.

The Toy axles are stronger, lighter, more aftermarket, etc. This is an easy choice if you're okay with narrower axles (which is the only reason I'm not running a Toy front) and 37s or smaller. And this is not coming from a Toyota loyalist, this is coming from a Jeep loyalist who put aside his pride and swapped in a Toyota rear axle.

I have no real allegiance to any brand. If it runs and can wheel I like it. :D

toy axles are bulletproof for their appliation and anyone that says otherwise is a stupid redneck :flipoff2:

on a more serious note, i see them day in and day out and the only ones that are broken are the ones that had a pinion seal leak for the last year and no longer have oil

One thing to watch on the Toy rears is the diffy. 10 pinion teeth ratios like 4.10's are very tough, 9 tooth ratios are so-so, 8-tooth ratios PLAN on breakage. You're still better off than with a 30 front though.

What I'll likely do is just run the 30 front until it breaks with 35's. I'm going to upgrade the 20 with a Lockrite and 1 pieces. Later on, I'll probably stick a Toy front in there. The wallet just told me I have to wheel with a little more finesse from now on. :grinpimp:
