Ding dong DAMNIT!!!

It kind of went like this "WAAAA, Bam"

Took no more than 10 seconds. I tried to gas it and drive out to no avail.

I'm sure Gunracer will be along soon to give his side of the story.

He tied his FJ-62 to my '40 and pulled me back upright.

We "Gerry-Rigged" my stuck trottle and Kate fired right up.

The one good thing is I did not smach my windshield that I installed on Friday!

I don't know, I thought i just had a tub dent but on Sunday whenever I put it in 4 low and climbed an obstacle, the fan was going into the shroud!

I visually checked the motor mounts and they did not look broken. But I was feeling some serious movement up front when climbing.

Somthing is screwed, just don't know what....any ideas?

Also, notive that the skid plate is not on the Cruiser...I had just knocked it off not 100 yards earlier!!

You are Killin me man, :shakingmyhead:
Take a very good look at the front motor mounts. They get old and can break fairly easily. Plus the way they are designed it is really hard to see if the rubber is solid or not. When I rolled mine I got it back on its feet and did not realize that anything was wrong until my brother actually MOVED the front of the motor by standing on the fenders and lifting the front of the motor up by the thermostat. Believe it or not, with the weight of the tranny and tcase it is not that hard to wiggle the front of the motor. I would check that..

Is Kate going to be in one piece for Moab????? OR you going to HAVE to bring that pretty red piggy to show off. We'll be nice to it. I promise. Hell, I'll even bring the 72 (open/open, three speed tranny, 31"tires) All you need it momentum baby..

i was wondering where you had went on sunday. i spent most of the morning nursing a self inflicted head wound. while jesse [aka skeet shooter] welded back together a power steering hose. we went back out saturday at about 9 and didn't get back till 2 am. did power line to snake pit and back. had a blast, just hated waiting so long, it gave us to much time to drink beer and bull shit. did jim and juniates sunday and played on power line some more. just glad i got to wheel with you, enjoyed it. mike

Nolen -

2 suggestions:

1. Motor Mounts: with the number of times that thing has been on its side, they have to be trashed. I would have soemone fab you some mounts based on the MORE parts (you are still 2 F right?)

2. WS: get a set of the stainless pins, and turn them down a hair. Cross drill the head for a split ring. That way you can pull the WS and leave it on the trailer or in the tow rig....

Where are the MORE parts available from? Might as well replace them, broken or not.

WS? I am lost. I'm sure this is obvious, but I can't figure it out.

Oh yeah, thanks!

I am curious about them as well.

And I think he was talking about the Windshield...

Drill and tap the hinges for pins. That way you can pull them when you get to the trail and leave the windshield on the trailer..

I'm not sure what the MORE parts are, but when I had my 2f fj60 sprung over I would eat mounts every time I went out. after 3 driver side mounts & a passenger side mount I got real pissed, cut off the studs, drilled a 5/8" hole thru & ran a 1/2" bolt w/ a nylon thread. Never had that problem again  . I cant see any reason they are the way they are. every early 350 I've seen is thru bolted & it made no difference in mine. + the bolts only cost a few bucks. way cheaper than 2- $30 mounts!!

Yeah,

I definately need to leave the windshield behind. I need to get that piece of lexan to keep the dust out!

As for the motor mounts...I am listening...do I replace the front tow and leave the ones on the bellhousing alone?

I'm not sure about the integrity of the bell housing mounts. I've heard they're a pain to replace. fj60's have a tcase mount. I would drill & bolt all that you can & if the driver side rear is too hard to get to then wrap it w/ chain & use a bolt to tension it.

Rear engine mounts have about a 1/2" bolt all the way through them stock. Only the front mounts are prone to shearing. THe rubber isolator that is sandwitched between the metal plates gets old and weakens. When it shears the motor is mobile...

You should only need to replace the front mounts.

So are these found at the usual suspects...SOR, MAF, etc?

Yep, I think the ones I replaced came from $pector..
Call the dealership though...
Forklift parts???
The MORE bomproof motor mounts I thought were only for Jeeps... But I could be wrong. If there is a better motor mount out there than stock I will order two immedately..

WS = WindShield yep

And yes MORE the makes of the bombproof mounts - they sell the components:

http://www.mountainoffroad.com/catalog/UnivBushAssy/uba.htm

should get you there.

Also the guys around here who roll a lot all run chain around the mounts.

Okay these are the pieces you suggest that we use for some custom motor mounts right?
Edit:
holy big ffawking image!!
see realistic image below

Kinda nice having them assembeled in a package already but aren't those pieces just shackle bushings pressed into a specific sized piece of tubing??? If so, couldn't I just make a set using some extra shackle bushings that I have sitting around the house?

I am going to look into making a set myself now...
How hard can it be. The LC bushings are ~1" in diameter with a 9/16" pin. (or so, not sure on the specifics) Plus two bolt holes. The stock mount is about 1.5" thick (again memory) It would be close to duplicate the thickness that is needed. I am going to measure tonight and see what I can find out...

Anyone have any ideas that I can steal??

:D

i broke both of my mounts on rocker knocker last year. i used a come along to lock the engine down and took off. when i got home i welded a plate inbetween the mount on the drivers side to make it solid. that lasted about 3 months. now i have 2 short chains welded to the top and bottom of both mounts. so far so good and free. but it's is a nasty sob to weld with that rubber burning and being oil soaked to. have you replace our bungie ball fix?

warpdriv
02-27-2002, 05:27 AM
Hey this gives me an idea. You know on fighter planes they have stamps of planes they have shot down. Well we can get a stamp of a cruiser and stamp our rig with the number of times we have rolled it. So if you see a rig with 3 upside down cruiser stamps, you know the person has rolling experience. This may also serve as a warning not to ride with the person too. :smokin: :rasta:

Now why would I do that? Works great and keeps me out of that last 10% of the throttle. That is a good thing!:D

i THINK the pirates of the rubicon already do that, every skull and crossbones on their rigs represnts a roll. Matt
