: Flipping rear springs questions

I'm in the process of flipping the rear springs on my '73 FJ40 and have a couple questions...

Does the shock mount have to be relocated?

Is it worth it, or not, to re-drill the spring to put the military wrap back in the front?

Thanks in advance... :flipoff2:

from what I have read, you absolutely want the military wrap on the fixed side of the spring. However, I have also read many times that drilling your springs can be a bad idea, because they are likely to snap where your old hole was. The old hole is going to end up located near the end of your spring plate where theres alot of stress.
All that being said, I think its a better idea to drill it than to not run the military wrap in the front. or, bite the bullet and get some 55 springs.

cheers-

Military wrap on the frame side please...

Drilling the spring pack is not much of an issue because the hole is still under the spring mount..

Do it.

Yup, I agree with both of you....

that's why I asked the question:flipoff2:

Frame side is the correct and safest option, but if the spring breaks I'm screwed... (well, not entirely since it's not the main leaf)

Anyone care to share thier experience with this?

Also, what about the shock mounts?

The shock mount will need to be relocated to the back side of the x-member. I just drilled a hole next to each original mount and used a grade 8 bolt.

drill the hole bigger and sleeve it. otherwise you run the risk of bending the mount easier..

You got a wrap bar right??

I am glad that I drilled my spring and flipped it. I rolled Saturday and bent the main leaf and the military wrap one. I finished the rest of the trail no problem, made me feel a little safer with both leafs still hooked to the frame side.

Working on that too. I'll be using the slip'n'twist design.

kruzr69 - Thanks for the input. That's what I'm looking for.

I have a wrap bar, I need to redrill the 2nd leaf to move the military wrap though.

I fipped mine without redrilling, has been working out fine. I rolled last year at about 40mph and no damage to the springs whatsoever. I am not saying go this route, just saying it works for me! (What's up Brian?)

I drilled mine. Can't give any real time feedback as I am not running yet. FYI, use a masonary (sp) bit to drill with. Much much faster than a steel bit.
