I am currently looking at a dana 44 trac-lok carrier with 30 spline spyder gears, from a 2003 Jeep wrangler.
My question is if this will work for my stock rear dana 44 on my 1978 traveler. I assume they are the same, but wanted to check with someone who is better informed than I. Thank you to anyone who can help. And sorry to anyone who believes that I should have posted this elsewhere.

this is the right place to post this...
it will work just as long as the carriers right size for the gear ratio
i found out that the new j$&p rubicon air lockers would also work for my dana 44...
dana 44's are dana 44's they are all 30, unless modified

There are some gear thickness differences...Since you are using the Wrangler carrier it should accomodate the difference in thickness.
If it was me though I would not mess with it. You are getting a TRASH-LOCK for your rig...just run a lockrite or other lunchbox locker and be done with it.

Careful!! We recently found that some, pre-67 Dana 44 used a smaller carrier bearing then present day dana 44's. This was discovered when a buddy was installing a pre 67 power lock into a newer front end. Also, early Dana 44's used 19 spline spiders instead of 30. SO not all dana 44's are the same.

Are the front and rear cases interchangeable? If so, what is all of your opinions about putting the trac loc in front, taking the open case, installing a mini spool, and put it in the rear axle.

Why don't you just put the mini-spool (if that's what you want/can afford right now) in the existing rear carrier so you don't have to setup the gears again. In other words, use the minispool in the existing carrier in the rear that already has the correct shims behind the bearings for the ring gear and pinion that are in the case already? You aren't saving anything to use the carrier from in the front.
The above assumes you have an open differential in the rear at this time. If this is not so, forget what I said.
Yes, the carriers/gears are the same front to rear.

I agree. Don't bother with the Trac lock, It's not worth the R&P setup to put it in.

Next time around I am welding the rear and only buying a lunchbox for the front. The lunchboxes I have now work fine.

Yea, that's what I did on the scout. The waggy and my old CJ were welded front and rear. The ZJ is a lunchbox up front and trashlock out back (factory).
The trashlock isn't worth it like others have said. Just weld up your diffs and if you don't want to do that up front then put a lunchbox in...
OOh yea, as for D44 diferences, don't forget that Jeep Grand cherokee D44s are aluminum center section and have different carriers and bearing setups too....plenty of differences in the D44 over the years unfortunately...

Forget that Jeep stuff, I've got a GENUINE IH FACTORY trash lock I'll happily trade you for an D44 open carrier.
That is, if you're really dumb enough to want it.
