: Tube Fenders
H8monday 02-25-2002, 10:01 AM I know we have seen them many times over, but I thought I would post some pics in the different stages of the Tube Fenders that, are nearly complete on my rig.
Joel, (Scout Dude), bent the tube, and fabbed the brackets at both ends, and the triangle sheet metal insert, at the side panel. I spent most of yesterday, building the angle supports for the upper fender sheet metal, and inner fender sheet metal(just the 45 degree section, between the tire and the body, the side of the fender wells will be left open). I had Joel angle my fenders 5 degrees inward at the intersection of the upward angled tubed, this pulls the fender in about 2" from the stock location at the front edge of the fenders.
I used 1/8" plate steel for the sides and tops. The tubes are fabbed from 1.75" (the wall thickness, is .125").
I should have done these fenders a long time ago, they are way stronger, allow easier access to the engine compartment, more room, and better mounting locations for accessories.
All of the electrical crap and wiring that gets shoved down behind/below the battery tray, is now gonna be mounted on a flip down access door at the upper half of the passenger side inner fender.
I dont know axcactly what Joel is charging for a complete set up, but he does very good work, and he does it when he says, he's gonna.
"Thanks, Joel"
Any way here are some pics.

H8monday 02-25-2002, 10:15 AM One more pic of the radiator mount/cross member. It has flanges at both sides for easy removal of the upper/center section, to allow access for radiator removal. The mount also provides roll protection for the radiator.

Military Jeeper 02-27-2002, 05:31 AM Looks good..........what did it cost you?
hoehand 02-27-2002, 10:08 AM Pardon my ignorance, but I dont have any expreience with a tube bender. How hard would it have been to put a curve in the down bar, which runs from the fender back to your rocker panel? I have already started fabbing up my mounting brackets, and had planned on matching the arc of the original fender for my new fender.

Im not really sure how much it costs.
Scout Dude fabbed the bends, and brackets, in return for the use of my Plasma Cutter (Thanks Joel). I already had most of a 4'x8' sheet of 1/8" plate steel(I think it was about $70 a sheet, and a 4'x8' is way more than enough). I have about $100 in material to Scout Dude, for tubing and hardware. He has probably 8 hours of labor into it including bending the new radiator mount and roll protection. I probably have about 12 hours into fabbing the inner frame, welding the sheets on, and grinding, and grinding and grinding,...did I mention grinding. It takes a long time to get the welds seamless (or as seamless as I care to try to make it), on that much linear weld.
I think if, I didnt like fabricating, I would just take it to someone like Joel and pay him, $300 or so, and come pick it up in a couple of days,...but then what would I do with my spare time.
bigjeepinYJ 02-27-2002, 10:41 AM H8,
I think that I have talked to you about your jeep before.... But I have been researching so much lately...Do you use anything other than Waggy Springs in the rear, or do you even use them in the rear. Awesome fenders....PM or just post back
Codeman 02-27-2002, 11:21 AM bad ass H8
YJ4LIFE 02-27-2002, 11:34 AM any rear shots?
BlueYJ 02-27-2002, 12:21 PM Those look awsome, just hope the fuzz leaves you alone. I just got nailed in Tracy for no mud flaps and the tires sticking out to far. The fat Fawk had nothing better to do. Now my brother-in-law thank God a Cop in Berkley is going to have to sign off the thrid one Ive gotten. Good luck, and thanks for keeping us posted on the work you are doing to the jeep.

I use a combination of stock Landcruiser springs (military wrapped main and second spring), stock waggy springs, and 44044 Rancho waggy springs. The garage engineered mongrels, are the best springs I have ever run, in 6 years of SOA suspension on this Jeep. They have held up great for the 5 months I have been running them since so far

Hell its either mine or my girlfriends daily driver. We fight over who gets to drive it, when the weather is nice. The thing actually drives very well on the road, Hell, itll do a 100 mph plus, (if your brave enough). I never got bothered, by the law, when I was living and working in Vegas and Reno, and I have only been pulled over once since Ive been in the Sacto area,(since last June). And that was because the CHP, officer wanted to talk suspensions with me.
Now Oregon on the other hand, was really bad. I had to fab up some crappy rubber fenders. They pulled me over within 15 minutes after I pulled it off the trailer up in Eugene when I was living up there. It took them about 30 minutes to do the same, when I was in Medford.
But luckily they are leaving me alone, here in No cal. I even drove it to work today.

Here is one of the Jeep though. I ran out of battery on the camera, so I only got off the one shot.
If you want more Ill take some later.

bluesman2a 03-04-2002, 12:16 PM Hey H8, that TJ in the background of that last shot looks positively PUNY!!!
Being the electrical phreak I am, I'm REALLY interested in seeing that panel setup you mentioned up near the top. Any chance we could get some shots and/or a futher explanation of where you are going with it?

TJ?? That looks like a YJ to me :D but none the less it does look wimpy next to H8's beast...

I appreciate the vote.
TTC would be fun to enter, but Im concentrating on the CalROCS event in Victorville right now.
The gas tank in my rig, is a plastic 20 gallon out, of a 94 YJ. It sits in the same location but up about 6" higher, and is neatly tucked away under the elevated bed you can see in the rear shot.

That Jeep in the background is a 95 YJ owned by one of my Construction Foreman. He has been putting together all of the parts for an axle swap, SOA, he is hoping will be installed soon. He has a D44/ F8.8 and all of the steel, for the wrap bar, perches, shackle reverse,..etc.
He has been lending a hand on my prep for CalROCS, so, I figured I would do his fabrication, the weekend after the Victorville event.
As far as the electrical panel on the passenger side. It will be a metal board with all of the relays, circuit breakersdistribution bars and fuses that will tucked up under the fender well, and easily accessed with the removal of a couple of allen head bolts, and swing down on a hinge. Ill mount a fan and some vents in it to keep the electrical components cooler. Ill seal everything water tight, and mount a box for spare parts in there also. That way all of the electrical will be either in the fender or the overhead console.
Its really not at the top of the fabrication list right now though.
However I did get my compressor and air system back on line last night, and it came out very trick, and is tucked away in the driver side fender,(I was even able to keep the truck air horn, located under the hood). :D
