: i thought jeeps were like-- dependable and stuff...
gonzos420 05-02-2005, 04:25 PM i got my 99 cherokee sport 4 years ago with 24xxx miles on it(5 speed)---and have taken excelent care of it-- have never really taken it off road,as i dont have it lifted yet--
last year i had to have 1500 dollars worth of work done to it for a new bearing, and some other stuff--well---yesterday(it has almost 94xxx miles on it now)-- i took off at a stop sign and heard a "POP"--then noticed that i had lost the drive to the rear tires---so i put it in 4x and limped up the road to a lot--stopped,then coudln't move anymore---aparently there's a bearing where the driveshaft goes into the rear diff---i guess it up and decided to go kaput on me!--- that's not normal for under 100k miles is it?
what gives man?...
sintax 05-02-2005, 04:29 PM =\
1972CJ5+1 05-02-2005, 04:33 PM If I were you, I would ask this question tomorrow.....
upnover-X 05-02-2005, 04:35 PM WOW, NO way MAN...............................
Sit down smoke a fatty :smokin: then Sell your Jeep....... It has something against you...... :shaking:
That would be a pinion bearing.... and YES they do need diff fluid.....
I bet if you get blinker fluid that will fix it....................and stuff
gonzos420 05-02-2005, 05:02 PM I bet if you get blinker fluid that will fix it....................and stuff
REALLY?-- where do i get that?-- never heard of blinker fluid before!--huhu..
it was chock full of fluid--i just changed it last year... :shaking:
i was wanting to keep it and lift it after i something else to drive...maybe i'll just trade it in on a truck....

Maybe you are better off trading it in on one of those new Hybrid honda civics...
gonzos420 05-02-2005, 05:32 PM lol-- i dunno- those are kind of small...but for 30 mpg... maybe i AM better off!-lol
i just got off the phone w/my dad-- he called the mechanic today(it's at the dealership)--they said that the rearend went completely out--(chry.8.25)--and that jeep doesn't make those rearends anymore, and that he'd have to order parts from all over the place and that it's gonna be 1400 dollars.
he also called "his" mechanic--(the guru)--and HE said that jeep quit putting those rears out BECAUSE of all the problems they had... i had no idea...
do you think it would be cheaper to maybe just find a whole different rear axle somewhere and put that on?...where would i find one?
jeepinmatt 05-02-2005, 05:44 PM They quit putting those rearends in them because they quit making the cherokee. If you are near North Carolina, I can fix it for about $1000 even.
mossrocktj 05-02-2005, 05:50 PM Buddy, I got a set of d44's w 4.88's & r-spool. You can buy two way better axles from me for that price. But you'll have to do some fab work on the brackets up front.
Just sell it, I can tell you don't want it.
BossBuilt 05-02-2005, 06:00 PM Jeeps are only dependable if you Gut them and put your own flavor in....Jeeps suck stock..
Lesson learned yet?
ForsterIV 05-02-2005, 06:33 PM These types of questions really should be saved till tuesday, but.... seing as how your a worthless noob just like myself I will take pity on you.
Here's my advice:
1. delete this thread
2. Find out your gear ratio, its stamped on the axle. Go to the junk yard and get another axle from a cherokee, any year (whether 8.25 or D35 seeing as how it will not matter to you) that has the same ratio.
You should have your mechanic do this for you:
3. Either: 1 buy new brakes 2 restore brakes or 3 swap brakes from your axle to the new one depending on their condition
4. Replace the gear oil in the new axle
5. Bolt junk yard axle in place of busted axle
now take the $1150 you just saved, buy a gun, one bullet and kill yourself.
have a nice day :flipoff2:
D'sYJ 05-02-2005, 06:39 PM I can't believe I read this thread....... I think I need a gun and one bullet too

hmm...well....i can see that this forum is just a font of knowledge from some very wise jeep owners...lol
uh...since i have a 99 XJ sport with an AX-15 transmission -- i believe the gear ratio is 3.07.

gonzos420 05-02-2005, 07:11 PM ....and why should this be saved 'till tuesday?
gonzos420 05-02-2005, 07:16 PM oh yeah-- ithought you guys might find this interesting---when she blew---i was pulled up next this blue cherokee that had ricer tailight covers, and big 18 or 19 inch chrome wheels--it was sickening--i had rolled down my pass.side window a bit and said something like "what kind of jack ass does that to a F'in jeep??"--- then the light turned green-- i took off normally, and POP---
then the pimped jeep rolled away... :(
that was just too wierd. :(
XJ4THEKICKIN 05-02-2005, 07:16 PM WTF, You can get a stock 8.25 for $100 anywhere. Who in the hell goes to adealership for something on a Jeep especially an axle, shit look on JU or NAXJA if anything.
gonzos420 05-02-2005, 07:51 PM i know that--well-- i know damn well i could prolly just get a whole'nuther rearend or axle for ALOT less-- but i dont have any money, and dont know where to look, and dont have time to mess with it....my dad borrowed me his truck to drive to work and is footing the bill for the repairs---i told him we could probably find a whole axle in a junkyard or somewhere, but he was just like 'screw it--at least the dealership warranties the the parts and labor for 12000 miles".... :emb4:
Bill Collins 05-02-2005, 08:14 PM i wish my jeep got 30mpg :(

Wanna tell me what your going to do with those axles. At 70mph your engine is going to be screaming with 4.88s and your stock tires. Plus with that spool you won't have much tread left after you drive around town.
TexasBlake 05-02-2005, 11:34 PM Tonight was a busy night for me. I got off work at around 2pm, and then preceded to go to school. Although school didn't start until 7pm, I got there early in order to work on a presentation that I have been working on for Environmental Economics. I sat there in the library typing my report on my laptop and playing on the internet (wireless networks rule) until about 5pm. At 5pm I met with my group members, and we went over the presentation, until we all split ways at around 5:30. One of the members was supposed to print off the final copy and bring it to class. I couldn't print it off since I couldn't print from my laptop, and assumed he would have enough responsibilty to. So we all met at class at 7pm like usual, and the group member that was supposed to print off the paper forgot to. We all thought we were in deep shit. Luckily the class has about 12 people in it, so we pretty much just do what we want. My professor just told me to email it to him when I got home tonight. Anyways, the presentation turned out pretty good. I found this amazing since the other two people in my group really didn't do shit. I wrote 5 pages for the report, the other guy wrote five, and another guy wrote a whopping one page. This also happened to be the same guy who forgot to print off the paper. Booo him! He is lucky that there were no individual grades to be given, cause I would have wrote all kinds of bad shit about him for being a slacker. After our presentation, there were two other presentations. One of them was about the environmental and economical impact of over shrimping in the Gulf of Mexico. It was rather boring, but their presentation included many charts and graphs to look at while the Monotone Trio talked. One of them was such an awesome presented that he wrote down every little thing he would say on 3x5 notecards and sounded like he was reading a car commercial. After class I headed home. Mainly to check my email. You see, there's another group project I'm working on for International Economics. There's a presentation and a few papers in that class that are due tommorow. My group member for that class (the other two we had dropped) hasn't emailed me back exactly what parts he has done and what I have to do. So, instead of putting any faith in my group member (somthing which in my experience is risky) I drove back to the school library to work on the entire project by myself. I sat there in the library jamming out to mp3s on my laptop and doing some Excel spreadsheets, pie charts, a little paper about the historical trade patterns of Japan, and basically did the entire project. Oh but there's more. Due at the same day is another project where we basically go over a chapter to the class. I started doing the power point presentation and typing in the "back of the chapter questions" when I realized that I would actually have to read the chapter to make the progress worth a shit. I figured I'd go home again and check my email to see if Slacker #2 decided to let me know what he was doing. So here I am now. My laptop is charging, I have no emails from my other group member, and I still have tons of work to do. Pirate4x4 addictiveness has lead me into the Jeep forum, where the first post I read was this. Somthing about it caught my eye. I'm not sure if it was the ignorance of the poster or the fact that so many people are making serious replies to this thread. Techincally it is Tuesday (12:32 my time right now) and the mysterious clockwork behind the Magical Tuesday interests me more than a sority girl bent over picking up a candy bar in the cafeteria. This being aside, I believe my laptop has fully charged up. Now I can retire myself to my bed, where I will continue doing other people's work. Thank you for your time. Goodnight.

call the local junkyard.
that axle should cost you no more than $200
Have your mechanic install it and he can charge you for 4 hours labor, work 1 hour, and be a very happy man.

ChristianBenzon1 05-03-2005, 08:47 PM where did you ever get the idea that a jeep was dependable?
Pietro 05-03-2005, 09:15 PM sorry about your rearend, literally. i personally never had a problem with my 8.25" with 175K miles on it. Then again, i changed the fluid on a normal basis. If it failed, you probably ran the bitch outta fluid. Everything has a life span, at 100k, your XJ will need:
new catalytic converter (oh, thats what that rattle is???)
new exhaust manifold
valve cover, rear main, oil pan, oil filter, and trans adapter seals
4th set of front axle u-joints
yada yada yada, its a jeep thing, you wouldn't understand
if you wanted something that wasn't going to break, you should have bought a toyota :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
go buy the special chrysler rearend setup tool (call Randy's ring and pinion for it, it is like 25 bucks, get a master rebuild kit (150 bucks?) and a good set of instructions and rebuild it yourself, they are cake to setup for a beginner, get dirty and join the club or swap that fawker out for a dana 60 :flipoff2:
Krusty 05-03-2005, 09:27 PM and your "daddy BORROWED you his truck"------
I guess the tards don't all live on the coast !!!!
it's a Heep !!---- the BEST thing about a jeep is its history. But that is where it belongs, in history.
A stock jeep: dependable--- NOT
reliable----- NOT
a GOOD trail vehicle-- NOT
cheap transportation---- NOT
good Wally-mart cruiser--- JOKE !!!
( I've had two jeeps---- 48 CJ2A---- 73 CJ5--- sold the crap and built a Toyota)
In the family now-- I have three Toyotas, the in-laws--6.
Toyoland66 05-03-2005, 09:42 PM i thought jeeps were like dependable and stuff
That funny because I always thought jeeps were weak, tin can, pieces of crap....maybe its just me :flipoff2:
Pietro 05-03-2005, 09:42 PM i love jeeps, thought my XJ was a great trail truck, but they are shit as far as quality control
i wish that toyota would have taken the offroad market a little more seriously when coming out with the new cruiser, because it blows, it belongs in the same class that the Liberty is in, fawkin useless grocery getter :mad3:
although a 05' taco came in today, short bed standard cab, looking pretty good (after you swap a solid axle in it and get rid of that pushbutton tcase shit)
missouriman 05-04-2005, 08:17 AM well this is the newbie forum, he is asking a question.
so with that out of the way.
I would do like said above and just get one out of the junk yard and drop it in.
make sure that the ratio numbers match. the junk yard should be able to help you with that.
have any numbers that you can find off the axle and the numbers off of the vin plate.
you may also need the date it was made.
Pietro 05-05-2005, 07:55 PM another recommendation along with missouriman's, if you arent rebuilding it by yourself (which you should to get some wrenching experience), get a junkyard axle out of a 4 banger with 4:10's and get the frontend also. the stock 3.07 gears are great if you like doing 100MPH. they will SUCK BIG WANG with anything above 29" tall tires. Upgrade now and save later
Hanr3 05-06-2005, 11:40 AM Its so lame it made my eyes cross and now I cannot read the screen. :flipoff2:
