im looking at a set of axles out of a 1974 dodge 4x4 dually........ is the rear the dana 70 35 spline?..... the weaker 23 spline or a dana 60?
and would the front be a dana 60 or a dana 44?

As far as I know, no manufacturer ever made a dually D44 front.
You probably have D70s fore and aft. I think '75 was the first year for the 'good' D60 front.

Most likely as he said, but D70 front, D60HD rear...very few actually had D70s for the rear...the front will be 35 spline inners with 21 spline at the hub and tracta joints at the knuckle...the rear should be 30 spline 1.3 inch shafts (even on the D60HD).

so pretty much if it is a 70 front it really isnt worth the hassle of messing with?.....
to put in a jeep that is.... or is it an easy swap from the knuckle out to convert it to dana 60 stuff?.......... and i assume that tracter joints mean closed knuckle?
the rear might be worth a little something though if its a dana 60.....

'74 Dually would probably have a closed knuckle 70 front with the tie rod behind the axle and under the pinion. The rear of a dually should be a 70 with 35 spline axles. And like was already mentioned it will probably have Tracta joints. There are some of these things that came with 1480 series joints though, without going through some of my books I can't remember which ones would likely have the regular u-joints. I've seen a few that came with 4.88 gears stock though. They are heavy but you are the one that knows how you are going to use them.

Actually, I have seen very few D70 rears in these trucks. Most often they were D60HDs...even in 1.5 ton trucks...most people call the D60HD a D70 though. I have parted/seen several W300s that were a D70F/D60HD setup.
As for the D70F, all dodge D70Fs used tracta joints from what I researched a few years back. A few were found under IH trucks with the 1480 joints. Being closed knuckle, there is really no way to convert to D60 stuff.

My 2500 has a 60 up front, and a 70 in the rear. Most auto equipped, cummins powered rams had 70's in the rear, and manuals had 80's.

The dana 70 front isnt that bad. I have been running one with 44 inch tsl's for a while, its still open but i havent broken anything yet. And since nobody wants one its easy to get extra shafts and hubs for it.

they are talking old stuff. you are 30 years too new.
All the 70 fronts i have seen were IH with 1480's. what do tracta joints look like? are they strong at all? a guy who goes by 'shadow man' on the IH board has a 70F in the rear of his scout and he was able to modify the knuckles to run the 35 spline stuff with big joints. look him up if you have questions.
My buddy just drug home a 75 ford 350 with a closed knuckle 60 front. it has 60 cast right into the webbing. I thought it was odd.

Tracta joints are three-piece...the ends of the shaft look like a two-pronged fork, these stick into a "ball" with slots...what happens is the forks spread and slip out of the ball under power. Once spread, they are junk. Sometimes the prongs break off too. They fail most often under power with the wheels turned much like a ujoint does.
As I said, easy way to tell if it is tracta is to count splines at the hub...take the lockout off and count em...21 is a tracta joint, 35 is 1480 joints...they are all 35 at the carrier. My "research" indicated that dodge used tracta only...IH used true ujoints. External hubs for 21 or 35 splines are the other problem...they be rare!
Closed knuckle 60s are most common in the military M715 Jeep...I do not know if those are ujoint or tracta...I believe ujoint.

Yes, the M-715 is a closed knuckle D60 with U-joints.

you sure it was a 350? i don't think ford built a 4x4 f-350 until '78.
i was going to try and use this same dana 70 axle. you don't have many options with it. the only locker you can use with it comes in a box that says lincoln on the side.
