I got a SM465 in my pickup. I asked a long time ago how to find out what it was, and was told to look at the 6 digit number above the plate on the passenger side. If it says 465, than that's what it is.

I now have three tranny's bolted to 205's sitting my garage that I got yesterday; one says 465 like the one in my truck, but the other two don't. One starts with a 3 ane the other a 6 (say 327 and 635?) instead of 465. Would this mean that they are SM420's or something else? All the housings look identical from what I can tell. And these are all 10 spline models.

Any light to be shed on this? Thanks!

yes, they are 465's. they easiest way to tell is a 420 has only one inspection cover 465's have 2.

Good to know. thanks!

If I'm removing the 32 spline 465 in my truck with a 10 spline 465, what (if anything) needs to be changed out regarding the clutch? I've never worked on a clutch before, so I'm not sure how they come apart.

Both links contain pics. That should help you.

They're definately 465's then. I'm just not sure about the differences in clutches between the 10 and 32 spline models.

nothing, they all use the same 1-1/8" ten spline input

they are definitely 465's because they are the only 4 speed ever mated to the 205 with a 10 spline connection.

Man! That's the best news I've heard all week! I was dreading having to dip into the driveshaft funds to buy new clutch components

Sweet! Now I just need to heave those heavy bastards up there and bolt them in...
