: Has anyone broken a stock NP205 to SM465 adapter?
Tankota 02-25-2002, 03:32 PM Got all the grease off of my SM465 and NP205 and the stock adapter has had the bottom ripped off and welded back on. Also there was welding (a crack I assume) on the inside end of the adapter where it bolts to the tranny.
How common is it for these things to break?
Should I run the welded one OR get another and keep this one for a spare?
Tanks.
PS Anyone got a spare adapter:D
ranger 02-25-2002, 03:39 PM Never seen one break....I wouldn't run the welded one, get another, and throw that one out!:skull:
i have seen a few aluminum adapters of all sorts fail. from stock to the advanced adapters. when you slam something hard enuff something has to give
hy_desert_4wheeler 02-25-2002, 04:31 PM If it is not leaking I would run it.. no reason to through it away just because it has been welded..
Tankota 02-25-2002, 05:01 PM The weld looks to be very shiny (no rust) even though it is somewhat old and had obviously been run like this for a while.
It is the stock adapter so it is some sort of steel (cast iron?)
So one vote for replacing and one for running it...looks like a tie:D
jslamerman 02-25-2002, 06:24 PM Im tryin to buy a heavy half ton truck cheap for the exact same failure the tranny to 20 coupler, which is stock, is broken, and its a pretty stiff piece of metal!!!! This is a truck that some kid mighta wheeled in the mud in a local field, not hardcore wheeled!!!! I never thought I would see another person with this failure!!! I now have to track down this piece, as I think its cast iron, and welding it would make it brittle!!
Cheepin 02-25-2002, 07:24 PM I broke my 465 to 205 adapter once.I wasn't even wheeling when it happened!!I was pulling a fence post out of the yard.I was backing up and not even getting on it.When it let loose and the shifter fell over.It broke into atleast 10 pieces. When I got to looking at the pieces you could tell it had cracks allready and just finally gave.If it looks like they did a good job welding it than run it till you find another.Good luck finding one. Most people want to sell the adapter with the t-case or tranns not seperate. My friend happened to have one that I bought for $50.Blazin:rasta:
Freshman 02-25-2002, 07:52 PM Just welded a crack in the bottom of mine yesterday. I think it was from the 205 not being tied to the frame. It is now.:roxy:
emsoffroad 02-25-2002, 08:00 PM I have seen a few brake. The only ones I've seen brake is when someone doesn't put that rod back on that goes from the tc to the engine. I guess over time you can brake one that would have this rod on it. But put the rod on or make a mount off the side of the tc(like Ford).
pcorssmit 02-25-2002, 09:50 PM I broke my 700-208 adapter when I was stock, hit the front of the cross member real hard. Took a case of tranny fluid to make it home. Don't remember if I had the t-case to bellhousing rod on or not.
My brother cracked his 350-205 adapter around the top of the figure 8, it was bolted to the frame also (stock). I suspect it happeded due to a sagging body, and some pretty hard use in Moab on Rusty Nail last year.

Skeeter 02-26-2002, 03:53 AM I blowed mine in half trying to pull/roll a large oak tree off a fence. I had the winch line out, but apparently it wasnt enough and the tree rolled over and smaked the jeep while I was trying to back away from it. One of those panic moments when nothing but STAND ON IT makes sense....Only I was tied to the tree and trying to run didnt work!!LOL!!! Anyhow, after the dust cleared, My shifter just didnt feel right. I dont have the t-case tied to the frame due to not enough clearence, so I cant say if that woulda really helped or not. I wouldnt run a welded one myself, too much stuff can go to hell in a real hurry if snaps in half. My rear drivshaft was the only thing keeping mine from falling out!! The front one seperated!
Depdog 02-26-2002, 07:19 AM Read the above posts. On the SM465 to NP205, there was never a rod to tie the NP205 to the Engine, that was on the auto tranny only NP205's. The SM465 Version was never tied to the engine or frame. I have broken mine once, broke one of the mounting feet off it. As soon as I find someone who is good welding cast iron I will have mine welded back and keep it for a spare since I have another on it right now.

Realsquash 02-26-2002, 07:42 AM I had a broken one between my 465 and 205. I think I would most certainly replace it. I know of 2 other people who have broken their's as I just sold them each one :)

Skeeter 02-26-2002, 07:45 AM DO you have any more you'd like to part with that are any good??

mmm... seen plenty of sm465's that were tied to the frame OEM..I personally have two that came factory with the bracket that goes over to the frame(two big holes in the side of the transfer case for the bracket to bolt to) and I have the bracket as well...One of mine came in a 78 3/4 ton suburban and the other in a 74 1/2 ton pick up...I have one that came in a 77 blazer that did not have bracket...I have never been able to come up with a pattern of which ones did or didn't have the bracket to the frame in respect to 465 version...Auto has bracket that goes to bellhousing, motor and even saw one that had rods on both sides to both sides of the engine(late model)...ANyways they do break when hit on a rock , from age and with a vehicle with uncontrolled axle wrap..A substantial upgrade is to fabricate one from cold rolled steel to make it more durable than the cast iron OEM version...Look on the colorado k5 site for a used one.good luck.:D
wheelinjp 02-26-2002, 03:55 PM I think a good way to tell if the truck came with one(frame bracket) is look to see if some dumb ass took the t-case out and never reinstalled it. Any rig with a clutch has had it removed and how many got back on. I think the Colorado K5 site is a good idea Dave. If the weld is still shiny then there is a good chance a pro welded it together, since that would be high nickel rod and it was probably done right.I would still just keep it as a spare. Why install a knowingly bad part? Especially when your friends only want to have to help once!!!!!! J/K talk to ya later Dave.
Tankota 02-26-2002, 10:39 PM Thanks for the input:)
I'm looking for another adapter and will keep this one as a spare. So if you know of someone selling one...;)
Skeeter 02-27-2002, 04:17 AM Yeh, all the ones I've messed with over the years do have the or had the bracket that connected to the frame. Problem with mine is, the t-case where the bracket goes is only about an inch from the frame and there isnt enough room to do anything about it. It's only happened once to me, I've put the thing through hell so I guess it has a pretty good track record...I think I'm just to lazy to try and rig up a brace to actually fix it..

Well I have 4 205's from 465's..Three have holes in them for the bracket in the side of the case. One does not.I haev seen a few others that did not have hole in the side of case for the bracket bolts as well....But, someone forgetting is most likley the case if it has the holes and there is not a bracket..:D
Shaker 02-27-2002, 05:18 PM I cracked mine doing Tug-a-War but after welding it back together and adding a few "supports" I'm ready to "Play" again....:D :p ;)
