AMC 258 ~ 25,000 miles on the engine, but shes lead a hard life.
I will start from the begining of the symtoms... The spark plug om the number 3 cylender started to get totaly encrusted in carbon buildup in only about 20 to 30 gallons of fuel, the exhaust also started stink horriably of raw gas. I use 93 octane fule and it is MPI. My first thought was the i had an injector stuck open so to test the injector i swaped the injector with another one to see if the problem moved. It did not. shortly after this problem started occoring i started to get a loud ticking soud from the engine after it was shut down "sounds like a valve tapping". with further investigation I found that the push rods tapped with the tapping sound. This leads me to believe that the problem is caused by my lifters. Has any one ever experianced this on thier 258? I plan on replacing the lifters in the next few weeks, should I also replace the valve springs? the spings have about 170,000 on them"i think".
