: Confused about 4.3 Vortec
StinkBug 02-25-2002, 04:11 PM i'm about to pick up a 4.3 from a friend from a 98 full size and i'm pretty sure its a vortec, but i've seen a couple different lookin motors. one has the nicer lookin intake with a big vortec badge and the one i'm gettin just has a crap load of wires.
heres what mine looks like:
http://www.michiganmotorz.com/images/Chevy_4.3/MVC-112S.JPG
and heres a pic i found of the other one, this one is supposedly a 95:

so can anyone tell me what the difference is in these motors.

gunracer1 02-25-2002, 04:14 PM its a vortec, i think they went vortec in 95 on the 4.3. if it was a tbi you would see the injectors. you might have a pita with a 98 computer, brian[aka high 5] bought a 97 computer to make the wiring simpler. mike
84scrambler 02-25-2002, 04:21 PM ok they are both vortes engines but the diff is the bottom one is a cpi- central port injection like a tune port more hp and easyer motor to work on the top is also a vortec but it is a smpi- suqental muliti port injection it has about 10 less hp and has a air mass meter:barf: and was in trucks and vans i would get the cpi vortec if i were you well hopr that helps storm:trooper:
StinkBug 02-25-2002, 04:52 PM thanks for the replys. its not really a choice tho i'm gettin a screamin deal on the top one. i was just wondering what the diff was. also i've seen a lot of talk about the VSS (tho always when talkin CPI) and i was wondering if its needed for this motor. it came off a 5speed and i'm hookin it up to a 700R4. am i gonna have a problem with that or does the SMPI not need it like the CPI does.

jslamerman 02-25-2002, 06:31 PM That newer motor is going to be a PITA, its OBD2, all kinds of xtra sensors, like fuel tank sampling pressure, cam sensors, all kinds of stuff, and the CPI was discontinued in 95 for emissions reasons. It makes more power, and you dont have to rig in a Mass Air Flow Meter, potentially a delicate piece that can be hurd by mud and or jarring forces. Do the CPI, much easier, I dont care if you got the top one for free, plus painless makes a killer easy harness for the CPI, I got mine from 4 WPH for like 310 before taxes, itll also wire in a 4L60E that both engine computers will run(Its actually a modded 700r4, so both would work, but the harness has a plug for the newer tranny if youd want to use it)
are you guys saying the top pic is not a tbi ?
so what is a deal?
for your average motor swap i would get a TBI motor and fyi i paid $500 for my complete motor. even if it missing just one part of the efi your deal may not turn out to be as great as you first thought.

Nope they are almost Identical Expect the Large Plastic Cover More sensors and TBI stopped in 95 1/2 for the Newer Seqental Multi Port injection started in 96 Vortec OBD II Mas air 4 O2 sensor's linear EGR and alot more sensors
Adam,
Adam Ant 02-25-2002, 06:49 PM also the Brackets are a dead give away it is late model motor
96 to 99
AC on different Side and ALT also
RokHeep 02-25-2002, 06:49 PM The newer motor will be fine. Go here and talk to either Luke or Greg; http://www.speedscenewiring.com/ . I am putting in a 99 Vortec 5.7 and they are building my harness and reprogramming the computer. :smokin: Anything is possible if you don't think like a bolt in wheeler... :flipoff2:
P.S. Thanks Adam! ;)

Zack or Greg you tard!!!

Luke is from Klune!!
Adam,
jslamerman 02-25-2002, 06:51 PM = BIG PITA!!!! No, it looks like a TBI, but its not. You are right though, the easiest (and cheapest)conversion is the TBI. I like the 50 xtra horsies on the CPI!!!! (and no OBD2 junk!!)
Adam Ant 02-25-2002, 06:52 PM P.S. Thanks Adam! ;) [/B][/QUOTE]
anytime!
Adam,
jslamerman 02-25-2002, 06:54 PM Its not a bolt in issue, sounds like a money issue to him!!!

OBD II is not that Bad if You know what you are Doing!
if you have the right resources anything can be done or made!
I hate Painless Crap they Build Shit!
and will never buy anything from them Again
Speaking from Experiance!
I wont go in long detail but the Harness is to universal not to the application and terrible Tech Support!!!! in my opinion they Know nothing!
I have Delt with Many Different Wiring companys Howell and Speed and Scene wiring are By far the best!!!!
Adam,
jslamerman 02-25-2002, 07:05 PM Ive heard the same thing repeatedly, but in this paticular application, its pretty specific, they use top quality wire and plugs. Plus, I work less than 2 miles from the company, so any problems I have, Ive got some contacts to get with them on!!! If I was further away, I wouldve considered other options, but locally weve had few problems, customer service is great here:D

the other place Speed and Scene are local for you to!OK not too local Because your damn state is so BIG
they do higher line of harnesses!
and its not the material!
its the time they take in each harness soldered conection's Loomed for Application and online Guide for HELP if any problems or need Ansewer's Quick !
In my opinion rather pay a couple extra bucks for Quality not Quantity

Adam,
haha, I can't keep them straight. They sound the same on the phone! They are both great guys. :flipoff2:
Mine is a 98 just like that one. I got it from a Bravada and took most of the Bravada wiring harness, and modified it myself. I am no whiz with auto stuff, but with a Bravada factory service manual, and some quality time, it is now running really good. And it has plenty of power.
StinkBug 02-26-2002, 08:30 AM Well i'm getting the motor with complete wiring harness all accessories, computer, exhaust and intake manifolds and tons of other stuff from a friend for a grand, and i know the history of the motor and that its been well taken care of. I'm pretty good with auto electronics so i'm really not worried about the wiring. I'm planning to pick up the factory service manual as soon as i get the motor and start learning. I dont mind a challenge, afterall i am doing this with an isuzu. As for painless and all the rest, why? if i'm getting a complete harness from the donor why would i need to spend more for their wires. Thanks for the info tho.

i got a question for adam or whoever can answer
i got a 89 tbi motor, is there a way to get a cpi/tpi intake from a later model 94+ i think and put it on my 89?:)
Rip DeLips 02-26-2002, 01:43 PM Yo Stanky!!! Kiss my ass!!! :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Hey, Get in touch with Jake will ya, and let him know what you found on the wiring harnesses and what the differences are in the 2 motors as far as power and crap.
StinkBug 02-26-2002, 03:04 PM hey rip, isn't jake doin a TBI motor? i didn't do any research on those, tho that place will do wiring for them as well. i dont have any #s but they told me i'd get an extra 20 ponies over stock, which is 10 more than the CPI motor how ever many that is.
Dallas
EDIT: check here for the TBI stuff they do http://www.speedscenewiring.com/TBI_wire_haress.htm
