: best gears for 35's and the 4.2L? Budget college buildup.
YJ4LIFE 02-25-2002, 04:56 PM would 4.10's be too low? what about 4.88s? I'm looking for a very budget buildup. I'd either:
Plan A:
Get a D30 from a 4cyl YJ since it has 4.10's and put in the 1 piece shafts 297's from a XJ or TJ, then a 8.8 with stock 4.10s to match.
or plan B:
Front Waggy D44. Rear toyota which can have 4.56 or 4.88 stock. Then do a gear swap in the D44.
A chevy v8 would go in far in the future when the 4.2L dies or when I actualy made decent money :rasta:
Monkeyboy 02-25-2002, 04:58 PM 4.88's
66CJdean 02-25-2002, 05:04 PM I agree 4,88 whatever combo
CJ-Jeeper 02-25-2002, 06:34 PM If you are keeping a 5 speed trans, go as low as you can
CheaseMuddin 02-25-2002, 07:08 PM If you have a 5 speed, 4.88's. I'm glad I did.
YJ4LIFE 02-25-2002, 07:15 PM ya I got the AX-15, but a 700-R4 MIGHT replace it in the future. The AX-15 always has given me trouble.
Po' riggity 02-25-2002, 07:24 PM Tas,
as you know, Im running 4.56's in my diffs right now with 35's. I had a manual with this setup, and it was alright, but in retrospect, had I not gotten the r&p for free, I would have gone with 4.88's. However, now that Im running a 3 spd auto, I find that the 4.56's are too high for freeway driving, so... my solution... BIGGER TIRES :)

chadl 02-25-2002, 07:34 PM Alright, I'll be different, I don't know you exact situation, or how far off the 350 is, but 4.11 4cyl axles are a dime a dozen, swap those in (front and rear), hold on to your old axles for spares, and then keep an eye out for a 4.11 geared 8.8 once you got it concentrate on toughening up the front (or go with something better). The stock axles aren't great, but with the spares you already got they probably will last until you get in the 350, by then (again depending on time) you may want more than any of the combo's you proposed, just a thought...

jslamerman 02-25-2002, 08:39 PM Check this out, right up your alley:

jslamerman 02-25-2002, 08:43 PM Then find yourself a Waggy D44 rear, and your in with the gears. Ive got the POS AMC20 you can have for free (u gotta pay shipping though), but I wouldnt waste the money re-gearing it, althought there was a LockRite in the for sale for cheap, and this ones got beefier tubes, nodular center, and one piece axles from the factory.
Keith Strong 02-25-2002, 09:10 PM The 8.8 is a very good swap, especially for the budgetary concerned ;) The D30 will hold up for the time being, depending on how you drive, but I like your idea of a 44 front better. Or just go to Pick n Pull, get a 60 and 44 and DO IT ;) :smokin:
Jeepmangled87 02-26-2002, 02:17 PM 4.56 gears all the way with 35's:skull:
RockyXJ 02-26-2002, 03:19 PM I've got a buddy, who's runnin 35's and 4.11 gears. 93 YJ i believe with the 4.0L engine. Hes happy with them as far as street driving goes, but for wheelin hes got a D300 in there and something else i think. Hes going to 36's don't know if hes planning on regearing or what, but basically for street driving, hes quite content with the 4.11 gears. But it seems the majority says at least 4.56's, and the lower gearing the more their going to help offroad obviously.
Josh 89XJ 02-26-2002, 05:52 PM I agree that 4.88s are going to be the choice here. Just out of curiosity, anyone else running 35s with 4.10s on a 5 speed?
