I just helped a friend pick up a 71' Scout II for $500. It has 82 thousand, a 232 six, three speed stick, manual drum brakes, manual steering, and a plow.

I had to drive it about fifteen miles to his farm and when we got there I noticed that I accidentally left the hubs locked in. When I unlocked the drivers side hub I noticed that it was quite hot, almost to hot to touch. The passenger side was cool. I assume that something is wrong?

The previous owner claims that the front end was "rebuilt". I don't know what his definition of rebuilt is, but it has new U-joints, brake lines, and ball joints. Could the wheel bearings just need to be adjusted? Do you need any special tools to tear the front end of this thing apart? I have torn apart the Dana 30 in my Cherokee, but that has unit bearings. How different is the Scouts Dana 30?

I read somewhere that power steering is completely bolt on. Does the steering pump and bracketry have to come off of a six cylinder, or will the pump off of a four banger or eight bolt up as well?

How much integrity to the body does the top add? I ask because we want to go topless, but the floorboards are pretty rotted and I don't want to have the body cave in if we drive it for a while without the top. The body is already so worn out that neither of the doors latch. Other than the floorboards it is quite solid.

Will the rearend in these things hold up to a welded diff and 31's with a drive-it-like-ya-stole mentality?

The previous owner says that it needs a throwout bearing. Is the throwout bearing the same for the six cylinders as it is for the fours and eights? I can't find a part number for the six cylinder throwout bearing at any of the local parts stores. I can hear a faint screeching coming from the transmission, but the clutch still seems to operate fine. Are these the normal symptoms for a worn throwout bearing?

If we were to do a springover on this, would it even be worth keeping the Dana 30 up front?

How come I don't see anywhere as much information about the six cylinder as I do the fours and eights? Are their any known problems with this engine?

Sorry for the long post. I searched for many of these subjects but maybe I am just to special to know how to properly operate the search function.

I suggest asking these questions HERE. (http://www.justinternationals.org/Binder-Bench/) Otherwise prepare to get flamed.

Go topless

You don't even need a cage

Scouts are over rated

If the doors don't close then fawk 'em and the top too... yank all that shit off weld both diffs (repack the front bearings) and beat it till it dies. Swap the motor, tube it, and come back.

Well, we are definately going to wheel it till it dies, but that could be a while. Other than the body, it is in great shape. It had been sitting for three years when we picked it up and we just pulled the choke out and she fired right up and ran great.

I don't know about welding up the front diff without power steering, but definately the rear.

I figure slap on some 31's, weld the rear, pull the top, yank the plow, and beat the living hell out of it till it dies. Then fix it with duct tape and a hammer and repeat.
