I have been out searching the forums for the last hour and have not found what I been looking for.
I am planning on building a new frame for my 46 CJ-2a. I have spoken with a couple of people who have seen it done and they said to use 2 x 4 steel for the frame.
Have any of you done it or does any one have any tips on doing it. I have some good ideas on doing it but I am trying to see what others have done.
:D

Check for posts by Brian1, Lame and CJ5inFourWheelDrive. All these guys (not to mention MrWillys above) know their shite about this kind of task.
Keep searching ~ there's a butt load about this in the Jeep section alone (but check general 4x4 too)
Good luck

A couple years ago the magazine “Sport Utility & 4-wheel drive” had a great article on a frame fab… I think they call the project “ All American”….
Just search the web, there’s stuff on this all over the place… I’ve got my 59 cj5 frame drawn in cad because I was going to build a frame… but ended up not doing it…

I was thinking of doing the center section with 2x6 steel and the rest with 2x4 steel. I was going to copy the stock frame the best I could. Much like every one else did. How much did you guys spend I steel. Trying to figure how how much I will spend on doing this.
Does any one have any pictures with the body on a new home built frame?

Just remember that the rear is 5" higher than the center, and then drops 3" where the rear bumper attaches. The front is only 4" higher than the center. The stock one goes 5" then drops 1" in front, but really isn't needed after you lift it. I cheated by using mandrel bent rails, but they weren't perfect and just kept measuring from the old frame. I've still got it sittin in the backyard. here's a couple pic's. Not sure if there what you want to see.

i am building mine out of 2 x 4 steel and it is coming out nicely, taking longer than i had expected, but have to work to pay bills.
i didnt go with all the angles and such, just stacked it ----=____ something like that. it worked out nicely.
tip for you though----- measure 3 times then weld. and keep sqauring things up.
all in all i like how mine is coming out and my wheel base and motor mounts and all will ne right where i want them and itll be stronger and cleaner that factory.
