this is the last thing to get the wiring harness done, when i turn the key to start the engine, it starts, but when it goes back to the run postion the starter stays engaged, turn it back a little more and it dies, i know its something w/ the ignition switch, but has anyone heard of it starting, and keeping the starter engaged?

You really should mention what kind of vehicle you have, and how you got to this point... It sounds like the ign. switch.
Try starting it at the solonoid, turn the key to the run position and jump across the starter relay/solenoid from the big hot terninal to the small terminal that energizes the solenoid magnet, if it starts normally, it could be a bad ign. switch.

Isn't there some sort of spring in the switch that makes the key go back after starting? Sounds like that spring is either bad or needs adjusting. Don't know if this applies to CJs, though.

How about the starter? I put a new starter in my old CJ and the starter gear was running out past the flexplate and getting stuck. Sounded like the starter wasnt disengaging.

IM PRETTY SURE ITS YOUR STARTER.........I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY SBC.....THE STARTER WOULD ENGAGE AND WOULDNT DISENGAGE UNTIL IT WANTED......

THAT SUCKED.....GOOD WAY TO START A FIRE OR MELT SOME WIRES......

i thank you for your help, i figured it out though, after some advice i tried the starter, it was workin, and then tried the solenoid, and that was the problem, the solenoid after being energized wasn't releasing, but works good now, thanks fella's
