The drill size for 3/4-16 tap is .6875 in. but the tubing ID is .625in. Will the tap take out the extra .0625 or do I have to drill it? Has somebody tried to just tap it? I would drill it anyways but I don't have a lathe.

And why not just use a 11/16 drill bit?

I don't think I can get it straight enough by hand.

but your going to tap it by hand aren't you ?

The drill bit will self center.

Alright, I'll try it on a scrap piece first to make sure, thanks.

with the small amount of material that you're taking out, the drill bit won't have any choice but to follow the hole. You'll be fine. Don't forget cutting oil when you tap, it sure makes it easier.
