: 74 FJ40 2f carb problems
jratt 02-25-2002, 06:17 PM I decided to rebuild my 2F carb for the first time. I went and cleaned out all the jets and ports, I did a good job replacing any old gaskets and such. My question is how does the secondary open and work with that pre-butterfly looking thing above it. In Haynes and Chiltons it is known as a "Reloader"... What the hell is it... There is no apparent linkage that opens this butterfly and it has a fairly good weight attached to it to keep it shut. I don't think that I am getting the power when I romp on it and I noticed that the secondary throat was super clean, not like the primary, almost like it is never open. One last thing, the reason for the rebuild is that on steep climbs the motor will sputter and die leaving me rolling down backwards with no brake booster assist . I did a check on the float and it is within perfect specs. Please, any help is apprciated on setup so that I can get the most out of my old motor..
By the Way.......This Forum Rocks:roxy:  :massey:
Screwzer 02-25-2002, 06:57 PM You might want to consider having the famous Jim Chenowith do it. Here's his info:
His company is TLC Performance, email is fj40jim@aol.com, phone is listed on
TLCA web site.
I rebuilt mine and it works great now, but it took 3 attempts and in the end, I probably had nearly a $1000 in trying to figure it out.
My 2 cents is to let a pro do that one.
Screwzer 02-25-2002, 07:01 PM The secondary on a 2F carb is actuated by a vacuum operated diaphram. Most rebuild kits include a fresh rubber bladder for it.
Ditch the Chiltons manual. It sucks and is inaccurate. The Haynes is good, but in the exploded view it doesn't show the power valve jet. Mine was missing and figuring it out led to costly replacement of other items in an attempt to correct.
Gotta admit though, with all them new parts, it runs sweet!

Screwzer 02-25-2002, 07:09 PM Yeah, it was nuts. Replaced Distributor (went HEI w/ 83 Toyota), ignitor, coil, got another carb. Took it to a mechanic ($300 for nothing :mad3: ). Tried many, many things. Where do you think that fuel pump I sent you came from!
It was not a fun experience. Training by trauma. I know how an Aisen carb works now though!
jratt 02-26-2002, 10:24 AM I appreciate the help, I reinstalled the carb last night. It now idles like SH#T and wants to die on me..... I messed with the idle adjustments and there are so many linkages that one adjustment messes with the other linkages adjustments. Also, does anyone have good setup ideas on there mixture adjustment screw, I have mine like 6 turns out which helped but still running like crap. It litterly idles like a prostock drag car which sounds cool but doesn't do much for smooth acceleration and gets annoying at stop lights trying to keep it running..... Does any one have a website devoted to carb setups, I looked around IH8Mud.com which is a smoking website but had nothing for me. PLEASE HELP. I Have a desert trip this weekend......jratt
Screwzer 02-26-2002, 11:05 AM OK dude, you need to chill. Have a or a  :smokin: and think it through. Carbs take patience and thourough checklists to go thru. Here's some pointers:
1. RTFM (Read the Fawking Manual). The Haynes manual does a pretty good job of walking you through the process. The only thing missing, as I mentioned before, is power valve jet is not shown in the 3D diagram. It screws into the bottom of the power valve (mine was missing and caused similar problem to yours)
2. Did you make the intermediate adjustments outlined in the manual as you reassembled it? Without doing those, or at least checking them, its gonna be real hard to narrow down the problem.
3. There are 4 fundemental adjustments to the carb that need to be set: Idle Mixture, Idle Speed, Fast Idle Speed, Throttle Positioner. They need to be set in that order. Initial setting for Idle mixture is 1-1/2 turns. It gets leaned out from there following the instuctions in the Haynes manual.
4. Have you adjusted your valves and timing? That needs to be done before any final adjustments to the carb.
The carb can be set, but you gotta be patient and you REALLY need to follow the instructions. If you don't have the patience, turn it over to someone who does. Your current method of working on it sounds like the 10,000 monkeys story. It will take you 10,000 trys to get it right this way.
SpaceGhost 02-27-2002, 03:46 AM Is the carb idle solenoid connected, and working. Without this idleing is very unlikely. Also when you took it apart, I assume you were careful to put the jets back from where they came. The Primary side (towards the engine) should have the smaller jets.
jratt 02-28-2002, 12:59 AM I appreciate all the help gentlemen. I think I figured out what happened. I being that I invited a professional mechanic who is also a buddy of mine over to undo the crappy rebuild that I did. We discovered that I installed the lower gasket, the one above the mixture screw, in backwards  . This cut off some obviosly important little ports. Now the idle is smooth and the power is good and crisp. I did find that the primary had the larger injector in it and I wasn't sure if this was correct. I wasn't the first person to rebuild this bad boy, maybe this is why I get 10 miles to the gallon with the original gearing and 33's. If any one has tips on setup please let me know. I may be a newbie but what a good learning experience about my crusher. Thanks again. Jarett
