: FJ-60 Purchase ?
sixsranch 02-25-2002, 08:33 PM I just went and looked at a 85 Fj-60 four speed a/c all the whistles. Its super clean. Second owner, Cal emissions ( Which will all come Off) It has Like 180000 miles. It drives great. It will be for my wife. Her 92 ford exploder Has about the same miles so its time to do something. I would rather put money into a cruiser then the ford. Even If this needs a new motor. Does any one else use a FJ60 around this year for a daily driver. and what might I look for that may be in need of replaceing on a rig this old? Also what would it cost to have somebody rebuild a 2F ? If I was to pull the motor & replace it myself? The wifes stoked!
Valentine 02-25-2002, 08:52 PM Welcome to the world of the wagons Hank! I finally got that Lock-Right installed a week ago. Works great! Haven't had a chance to work it real hard yet though....
Anyways, mine's an 87 with 203,000 mi.
I haven't had any serious problems that weren't due to neglect or operator error in the 5 years of owning it.
4wd works everytime & hasn't ever left me on the side of the road what else could you ask for?
I picked up a 2f from Tacoma a while back, so if you end up getting the beast & need any odds & end engine parts, let me know.

orangefj45 02-25-2002, 09:17 PM i've got a 2f with less than 5k miles on it sitting in my garage that's waiting to be put back to use. pulled it out of a 75 fj40 about 3 months ago to do a v8 conversion. polished valve cover, all malory ignition (distributor, box and coil),..... runs tits.
let me know if you're interested.
PS: my wife drives an 84 fj60 with 50k on it and she loves it; so do the dogs!:smokin:
60seriesguy 02-25-2002, 09:22 PM sixranch, is there a problem with the engine? If it runs well, you shouldn't assume there's a problem, a well-maintained 2F that hasn't been abused will go longer than that. My good friend Rob Bahr had a 1983 FJ60 with 325,000+ on the original engine, and it's not uncommon for them to reach well over 200K.
sixsranch 02-25-2002, 09:24 PM Nick how's the New Baby?!
Orange, what are you asking for that motor?? nothing is wrong with the motor I wasn't sure how many miles on a 2F are to many. It has been well maintaned she has all the paper work and records.
Sloan 02-25-2002, 09:55 PM I bought an 84 for $3K and I LOVE that truck. BUY IT< BUY IT< BUY IT. Mine has 235,000 and is still humpin with 33s.:D
Deep South Cruisers 02-26-2002, 05:52 AM I have had mine for about 4 years, I have over 190k miles and the main problems were caused by neglect by the previous owners. Its running pretty good now but has the common exhaust leak at the manifold (thinking header & new exhaust).
I have replaced the rear main seal which is leaking again and the oil pan gasket (also leaking again) p.s. pump, belts, hoses, fuel pump, etc.
There are some funky things about thay year you should know...
1. The gauge cluster will "freak out" occasionally, burying the temp gauge and fuel gauge past the red (not a issue, just a heart stopper on a trip.):D
2. Every now and then, during starting you'll hear a pop under the center cosole, followed by a strong burnt match smell (clogged cat-converter??)
3. On cold starts they all have a different ritual, mine is pump the gas turn it over pump the gas, start. If I pull the choke first, it ain't starting.
rugburn 02-26-2002, 06:27 AM 350 TBI.
Same basic engine as in your 40.
All parts for tuneups will be the same.
Get NV4500 or 460LE automatic and get better mileage than the exploder.
When in doubt, throttle it out!
GO FOR THE WAGON!!!!!!!!!
dog walker 02-26-2002, 07:24 AM I've been driving my 82 wagon as a daily driver for a bout 5 years now. Its also Sprung over with 35's and a rear lock-junk! Mine has like over 180k, and lately has needed some parts replaced, but even after driving that thing to places like Moab, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Oregon, all over! It just keeps on going, and has never left me stranded. It may be a gutless pile, but I like it! I probably would have never done alot of the traveling that I've doneif it wer'nt for the O'l wagon.

Cruiserhaven 02-26-2002, 07:39 AM I drove a FJ60 for many years as a daily driver. My biggest problem with it in the end was the gas mileage. The trips to the pump really add up if you do a decent amount of driving and you are only getting 10-12mpg. It's also no fun if you have to deal with alot of bumper to bumper stop-and-go traffic.
Besides the problems others have mentioned (leaking rear mains, oil pan seals, funky instrument cluster behavior, ...) the biggest problems I had were cooling related (leaky hoses, water pump, fan clutch) and standard age related issues like starter and fuel pump.
I now drive a very economical Toyota Corolla (boooring!) to work. The money I save on gas each week pays for truck mods, and the automatic is much more pleasant in stop-and-go traffic jams. I still miss driving the ol' girl to work though [sniff]
Welcome to the Elongated Cruiser Club!
