: CM05 carnage??
FullsizeYota 05-08-2005, 02:25 PM since its sunday and CM05 is over......... whats the carnage list??
i blew my th-350
buddy broke pinion/birfield/driveshaft yoke it one shot.....
heard about a guy in camp that blew a t-case in half......
lets see some pics
nuclearlemon 05-08-2005, 04:21 PM i've got issues between the tcase and tranny...tranny's blowing into the tcase and leaking at the adapter (crappy adapter from classic crap...ooops cruisers). loose pinion flange (nuts staked and tight, bearing seems tight, but still slop...took over a year and a half for this to show up... ), two blown header gaskets and my 4lo pop out issues have returned which is why i blew off steelbender saturday.
treeroot is loosing fluid between his adapter plate and tranny.
nick from rocky mountain cruisers blew up a cv shaft on his new taco (he totalled the old one a few months back).
who was the guy who was stuck up on prichett looking for a diff (blown pinion)? my solution was to take hatfield's extra pig pinion and just weld the flanges...is that what they did? i haven't heard.
heres a shot of nick and his cv axle
nuclearlemon 05-08-2005, 04:23 PM who blew a tcase in half? hope they didn't think it was me...mine was hanging from sunday afternoon til monday afternoon while i was trying to figure out the oil transfer issue.
speaking of oil, here's the oil from the now third oil change on treeroots orion...actually, it wasn't really an oil change...more like oil recovery. if anyone needs a cottonwood free campsite at slickrock, just go where treeroot and i parked...the oil should keep all oil and dust down for quite a while :grinpimp:

Paul from Wasatch Cruisers busted his T-case in half.
The guys he was running the trail with had his out and a loaner t-case in the truck in under 3 hours.
I busted a front main leaf in my OME spring pack on Hole In The Rock on Wednesday  So I loaded all of my and Dannielle's gear into Rudeboy's (Rising Sun). and David H's (Wasatch Cruisers) trucks and we finished the trail.
When we came back, we used a ratchet strap (offered by a member of Rising Sun, I am sorry I forget his name) to keep the axle from moving forward, and I drove the truck off the trail. I had asked Troy D. (Wasatch Cruisers) if he would mind trailering my rig. He said yes, but he had been having problems trailering his own truck down to Halls Crossing, and had decided to have his son drive his truck, while he dead headed the trailer back to moab. We agreed that if I had problems driving the truck, we would load my truck up, and just take things slowly. Well, I didn't have any issues (thank god for military wraps) driving the truck.
FWIW, the truck ran fine, even at 70mph...
When I got back to moab, I ran into Gary T. who ALSO busted a main leaf. He had 2 spare (stock) springs coming down from Salt Lake and he offered me one. When the parts runner got into moab, it turns out that he only grabbed one.... Well Gary gave it to me since I drove down and he trailered his rig down. I spend all day Friday pulling the OME pack and disecting the OEM pack to get the main leaf and putting it all back together.... A job that should have taken 2 hours took me 10    because I needed u-bolts... Then I needed a new spring center pin, then I needed new hack saw blades, then I needed bushings, then I needed to have the bushings enlarged (thankfully, I saw Ige washing her truck across the street from CarQuest, and she ran me over to Moab Drivetrain)..... Otherwise I had to WALK all over Moab to get parts... GAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyhow, I got it all back togetherm then I noticed that my Saginaw box was leaking ALOT of PS fluid, and the surface between the Tranny adapter and t-case was leaking ALOT of Gear oil.... And my rear Pinion is leaking ALOT of gear oil......
Now, as I was driving to the Bar M for the Raffle and dinner, my hood popped up and slammed into the windshield breaking IT and putting a nice dent in my hood (the last straight piece of sheetmetal on my rig)...
So I decided not to go on the trail ride on Saturday.
Lets just say that this was not a good weekend mechanically for my truck...
eshelbyk 05-08-2005, 09:14 PM We had a pretty mild year.. here's what I can remember-
rear pinion - Kevin, Monday/Hell's Revenge
rear driveshaft weld - Ed, Tuesday/Rusty Nail
birfield and inner axle - Larry, Monday/Hell's Revenge, but didn't stop him from walking right up Escalator in 3wd without stopping
rancho 9000/on the drive out - Jerry
clutch, carb, birfield, water pump/on the drive out - Barry/Sarg...... and so much more I can't remember :(
axle shaft/pinched fuel/brake lines, tranny- Ed (no rollover though!)
birfield- Guyute
OIL COOLER FITTING LEAK (!) - Medusa
massively hard 4 rolls on George's Hill(might be wrong name?), both rear leaf spring packs at the big tub/Hell's Revenge - Gunmetalcruz
oh, and voodoo pierced a tube on his buggy's tire

Yeah that's pretty mild for the Cascade Cruiser carnage.
Seems like Ed is having horrible luck with his rig. Last time I was out with him, we spent 6 hours trying to replace his rear pinion because none of us knew how to take out a power trax.
nuclearlemon 05-08-2005, 10:00 PM i learned today that matt farr blew up his rear end/axles/driveshaft and that greenchili went to the hospital with a concussion...ouch on the rising sun side.
FullsizeYota 05-08-2005, 11:18 PM the rest of my buddies got back today..... one blew a front main seal in his th-350 on the top of poison spider saturday night.....
Box Rocket 05-09-2005, 07:31 AM Carnage lists are cool and all but.................
SHOW SOME PICS!!!!!!!!!
CaverInaCruiser 05-09-2005, 09:08 AM Here's my broken pic
Sorry its out of focus.
The Macro function on my GF's camera doesn't work anymore.
treerootCO 05-09-2005, 09:20 AM I was riding with Matt Farr when the rockbox input/output shaft broke on another rig. Light blue 40.
I had my wheel bearings back out on Porcupine Rim and my tranny puked all it's oil on Fins. It was leaking between the adapter and the tranny.
The oil in the Orion looks like something really bad happened but I am not hearing any noise and it runs great. I'll post an update as soon as I pull it.

ToyLand4x4 05-09-2005, 09:43 AM Damn Treeroot you freak me out with those oil pics
I checked last time you posted them and mine looked good , now Im scared to look.
Keep us posted!
BionicCruiser 05-09-2005, 05:09 PM i got out easy. 2 broken Heims on 2 different days on my trac bar. time to beef it up.
and a big THANKS to Cascade Cruisers for letting me tag along with them on their pre event runs. :D i had a blast and gotta get back to do Rusty Nail since that is the only day i missed (broke the 1st heim on the first obstacle).
got good video of gunmetal wiping out his springs. :flipoff2: and not 2 hours before he was telling me about cherokee springs being easier to find than my FJ55 ones. i refuse to flog mine as hard as he did to see how they hold up. :p he was gittin' it!
Gunmetalcruz 05-09-2005, 05:12 PM Bionic it was great wheeling with you. Can you send me the video or host it. I would love to see that and or the flames to.
BionicCruiser 05-09-2005, 05:16 PM sure. forgot my power cord for the camera in the hotel. they are sending it. i will have to mail you a vhs version, my video cam is old and nondigital. send me an address to send it to. swilliamsffpm@msn.com
eshelbyk 05-09-2005, 06:42 PM flames flames flames! If you can do a capture, Tom, I can host. That ought to be a pretty busy video with the hot tub action and the black plume.

the rock box is so bad :grinpimp: , my buddy has one. but it almost seems too low... everytime he engages it he blows something it seems like. he had the lime green 40 on 36 iroks

Yup. There's just something about putting an irresistable force up against an immovable object that says something's GOT to give. That's why I haven't gone down the road, and still wheel 'inside the box' as Dave Conners put it in the TT.
That said, I'd still have to admit I'm very close to getting an Orion.........for the 45! :D
FrankenToy 05-10-2005, 01:17 PM Prolly shouldn't post this, but it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission:
cruiserbrett 05-10-2005, 03:14 PM that yellow cruiser flopped pretty hard by the looks of it?
Treeroot, that looks like you are about to lay down some grey metallic paint on the truck, not gear oil. No good. something is slowly self destructing.
-Brett
jiriki87 05-10-2005, 03:54 PM I think Heather enjoyed Ray's rollover :flipoff2:

That is the 3rd oil change and everytime it looks worse. I am going to pull it shortly and we'll know exactly what is happening. So far, I haven't heard any noises from the case, it runs great, and everything is tight.

65SWB45 05-10-2005, 09:28 PM I think Heather enjoyed Ray's rollover :flipoff2:
Peter
After watching Ray struggle with traversing a small crack on Porcupine Rim Thursday, I suspected he had some gearing issues. Nothing else could explain the lack of motion given the 38" tires and the V-8. Ray told me that he only had a 3 speed tranny in the rig! :barf:
After the roll, he told me it was the momentum he was forced to resort to compensate for the lack of gearing that caused his roll.
I imagine I would have faced similar difficulties if I had brought out the 45. In retrospect, I think that many things like that worked out for the best. :)
fuelnjktr 05-10-2005, 10:09 PM Nice pic of my AA Rock Box. Actually, AA has been great to deal with. Mike sent out a new output shaft and bearing today at no charge. Here is a list of carnage to my 65 FJ40:
Trip Out: Blew out trailer tire
Day One: Metal Masher, no carnage
Day Two: Pritchitt Canyon: laid on side on Can Opener, then later broke pitman arm, birfield, and killed both batteries with winch
Day Three: Broke AA Rock Box output shaft
Day Four: Bummed Rides
Awesome trip!!! :flipoff2:
zgcruiser 05-11-2005, 04:25 AM Mark, you hit the nail on the head!! I'm already planning to change my tranny & t-case, maybe even before I get my carnage repaired! :grinpimp: but we'll see! Had a great trip and don't regret a thing!! Just learning! Thx Yellow 40 (Ray)
P.S. Peter I zoomed in on the pic and Jason is just standing there grinning from ear to ear as I'm going over. I'll email it to you if you get me your email address.
65SWB45 05-12-2005, 09:48 PM Dre asked me to post this photo of his crumpled axle housing. It's the area right around the spring perches
OnTheSpot 05-13-2005, 01:09 AM I didn't realize you could crumple an axle housing like that. Hmm. Bummer.

He is running a cummins diesel in a pig...
dieselcruiserhead 05-13-2005, 05:17 PM I'm not sure if it was the cummins though I'm sure it affected it. Big thing I think is lack of a traction bar. It ripped 1/4" holes where the welds end on the rear of the housing, that is where the gear oil leaked out. Had to JD weld it to get home. Short answer is *definetely* get a traction bar, I was playing around with the idea of putting one on but didn't after the thread on mud. After seeing that pinion on the back of that FJ60 and the poor guy who had to rent a jeep to repair it, I think if you are in Moab on the high traction surfaces especially you definetely want a traction bar, in the rear at least, on any SOA vehicle. The Cummins does have more torque so that may have made it worse. Luckily (strangely?) it did not break anything, no axle shafts, 3rd members, at all - just the housing. It did take my pinion and point it way up. I lost a u joint on the way home because the pinion angle was so excessive. It was not perfect because I set it, then lowered the truck substantially, then proceeed to drive. But lack of a traction bar made it significantly worse. Problem is right now I don't really have the cash to build a decent axle like a ford 9" or any of the other options (rember the "polishing a turd" thread something like 2 years ago?) Someday I may want to haul some junk with this rig too so I do not know if the housing will hold up. Dana 60 rear axle housing, for example, is possibly 1/2" thick(?) for comparison. But weighs enough to show it too. In the meantime for me, scored a complete replacement Toy rear axle for $75 so that is my route for now. Worth more for resale complete anyway even if I don't keep it. But I am going to try it, with a traction bar, possibly beef up the housing but be safe about it, and see if it happens again. I do think a traction bar will help it...
Andre
65SWB45 05-13-2005, 10:11 PM Dre, I thought about your situation on my long drive home as well, and I thought that if you sleeved the upper half of the housing with a cross section of pipe that was about 6" across, it would spread the load out to the point where the perches couldn't affect it. I would run this idea past Jeremiah tho, since he's the one who welds mini outers onto cruiser centers, and knows what's needed to make the mini outers survive. :)
coolcruiserfj40 05-14-2005, 11:14 PM legde right after devils crack going down it hit the nose hard and gas pedal got hit got i flew off and hit the next ledge = 1 bent rims 1 cracked aluminum radiator cracked the front bumper and bent frame bumper mounts broke off shackle mounts :barf: edit: almost forgot dented in the rear quater panel on hells gate
dieselcruiserhead 05-15-2005, 01:23 PM Mark probably not a bad idea at all. Havn't started tearing into it yet. I'll posts pics of what I come up with
