: Chevy vortech v6 engine swap
pirhana 05-09-2005, 06:14 AM I just ran accross a site that is offering a chevy vortec v6 for sammy's and while I dont own a sammy, I do however own a tracker 4x4. Wondering if the chevy vortech 200 ci v6 engine would work in my 94 tracker. Is it practical to do this engine swap or would it make more sense to perf the stock 1600cc suk motor?
Engine specs for comparison ( at stock )
Chevy V6 Vortech 200 ci engine
190 horsepower @ 4400 rpm
250 lb-ft of torque @ 2800 rpm
Suzuki 1600 cc 16 valve engine ( at stock )
Horsepower (SAE net) 95 hp @ 5600 rpm
Torque (SAE net) 98 lb.-ft. @ 4000 rpm
It sure looks like a no brainer to me looking at the difference in power between the two engines, and thinking it should fit. The site I found is offering several packages and while I would love to go with V6 Full Crated kit ( $5,175 ), I will probably end up going with thier V6 Advanced kit ( $2,300 ) V6 Basic kit is $970 .
I would need to increase my HP and Torque considering I am lifting it and will be running 33"x 12.50r15LT TSL Radials, thinking 190HP and 250 lb-ft Torque for a vehicle that weighs 2387 lb ( 4x4 model curb weight ) should be a good swap.
Any thoughts? Heres the link to the site with this motor packages http://www.rocky-road.com/vortec.html
bansheeman1 05-09-2005, 07:12 AM don't spend all that money on junk you don't need
on a sammy half of the stuff thay send don't work and it is a mess when you use the kit
just figure out what traney and transfer case you plan to use and get it all at a junk yard and put it in build your own mounts and save big $$$$$

You know, your absolutely right on that. Any knowledge on what vehicles had that motor?
DSBANHEN 05-10-2005, 05:43 PM You can find that engine almost every 4x4 s-10blazer ever built from 91-01, different years use different injection and emissions systems, so be careful what you get, and make sure to get it ALL. 91-95 had the "spider" injector--1 injector with 6 legs, the newer ones all use sequential multiport injection, one injector per hole. good luck. db
upandovr 05-11-2005, 10:35 AM What are the best years to find for the easiest swap.
YJScrewen 05-11-2005, 11:08 AM i would go with a TB model
i got mine out of a 95 s10
is supposed to have 210hp (so they say)
works mint
but be sure to do your own fab work it will save you a ton!!
Hanr3 05-11-2005, 12:49 PM You can get a 4.3L engine and the 700R4/4L60(e) tranny out of most S-Series trucks, and 1500 1/2 ton Chevy pickups. It was standard in both of them for years. Make sure you get the tranny from a 4wdr truck. The 2wdr tranny has a longer output shaft then the 4wdr version. No biggy if your going with a divorced t-case, but if your going to bolt the t-case to the tranny, get the 4wdr model. Otherwise you can swap in the shorter output shaft, however that requires taking the tranny apart, best left to someone with experience.
I think TBI would be the easiest to swap over. Get the computer with it. Wiring would be a plus, although you can buy it in the after market. The early 90's would probable be the best years. TBI and limited amount of electronincs in the tranny.
With the 4.3L engine, any tranny that bolts to a sbc V8 will bolt to it, even manuals.
Most of the sensors to run the engine come on the engine, with a few exceptions. O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe (easy to add), VSS, and brake switch. The last 2 sensors are needed to controll the Lock-up Torque converter. Not needed if your not driving this on road.
no excuses 05-11-2005, 01:29 PM I just put a 88 4.3 TBI in my yota, running a turbo 350 behind it. Buikd ur own mounts and save a ton of cash. I had AFI (in the vendors section) buikd me a chip (90$) and harness (245$) and it works great. I do not run VSS or EGR ect ect. Way better then the 22R i had in there :grinpimp: .
jeep family 05-11-2005, 03:00 PM I just put a CPI 4.3 from a 95 blazer in my 74 jeep. I am running a SM465/NP205 combo behind it out of a late 70's blazer. This was by far the easiest swap I have ever been a part of. PS the 4.3 is 262cuin not 200 if you care. It helps when hunting parts to have the cubes right.

Alot of great advice is being given on this post, so thanks to you all who are replying back with positive directions rather then negative remarks ( flaming ) as I was sure I would recieve some... especially in regards to the tracker:).
While I was reading over the replies left by you guys, I began to notice most were refering to the 4.3 liter engine... The motor I had seen specifically claimed to be a 200 Cubic Inch motor in v6 vorthech. Now if you guys seem to think that a 4.3 liter motor would be a better choice AND fit under the hood with out modifying the vehicles body or frame, then of course I am all for it... Anyone have HP and torque specs on the 4.3???
LiftedAWDAstro 05-11-2005, 08:46 PM The specs on you so called 200ci motor ARE the specs for the 262 cube 4.3L vortecs.
Find a wrecked S-10 truck or blaxer and get the engine/tranny/t-case and have fun!
jeep family 05-12-2005, 06:58 AM Best to grab a Chiltons or Haynes for the motor you want and get all the specs there. You will get anywhere from 175-210 on that engine. Then alot more if you modify it as you install it. 8.8 wires, Eletric fan, flowmaster dual exhaust, K&N filter, etc.
RDR800 05-12-2005, 10:05 AM I believe that I have a 4.3 Vortec motor(longblock). Is there any way of identifying the block and heads to be Vortec? I plan on running a 4bbl carb, will this work and what intake will I need?

Oh OK, I guess the web site I was checking out had typo's then... anyone for see any modifications other then mounts to get the 4.3 liter motor in the 94 tracker? I am thinking 2x the HP and almost 3x the torque should be a good starting point from the original specs on the tracker... but what of the trackers frame... can it handle that?

edlebrock sells an intake manifold to convert the 4.3 to carb. Just make sure you get the right one. There is one for the vortec motor and one for the non vortec 4.3.

I belive that the 200ci was the 2.8l V6, But.. I don't think there was a vortec model 2.8l
strtdsmallproject 05-12-2005, 06:02 PM I have a 89 4.3l with a carb installed in my samurai. I am a gm diehard and love my 4.3. With a stock 4.3l i can burn 35's. I would love to do a 4.3 4 door tracker next. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
