Nope the should be both 30 spline and use a 297x u-joint or you can get the stronger u-joint the 5-760x....:D  :p

Shafts would be the same 30spline.
The differences might be in the tube size & thickness, and 8lug vs. 6lug.
Some feel that the new 5-760 joints are stronger & some testing has shown they are the same strength as the 297's.
A real upgrade would be same Warn shafts & CTM joints.

Have you seen what they want for ctm joints?? Try $150 smackers each, $300 for a pair....maybe after I break a few I'll see the light but until then.........But the reason I asked about the shafts is that I have a 1/2 ton front d44 w/ the shafts still in it, If they are the same which everyone is saying then I will take the time to remove them and consider them spares....cool huh

Are those 5-760 joints any stronger?? Do I have to order them from a mag or can I get them at my local napa?? Are they more expensive??-

Who is "They"? In talking with a driveline shop owner that did some research into them, including calling Dana, he couldn't find any substative data showing they were stronger.

The empirical data posted by BBS members suggesting they're stronger is not enough to put a percentage on strength, or even if they're any stronger.

Just curious, I'd love to see some real data showing the 5-760s as stronger, having just completed an RC44 buildup for my Heep and ordered Moser shafts for it- I'd like them to last a while.

They....4 Wheel & Off Road article. I'll find out for myself rear soon. The big MAJOR factor is how you drive! I break parts occasinally but I build my stuff "Overkill" but thats just me. I just put a pair in my 44HD that "project 4Runner" is gonna have. With my 500HP/doubler I'm sure i'll find out. As for TRUE PROOf.....buy yourself a set and romp on them see what you come up with, it's only $45.00..... :p :p :D

Please be sure to post back here, how they hold up, and be sure to give hell.

Yeah, I know it's a relatively inexpensive difference in cost between the joints. But when every penny counts right now...:(

I just found some guy's siote, where he lists the differences between the joints:
1 - Forged trunnion cross.
2 - Larger needle bearings.
3 - Smaller trunnion bearing surface (~.02)
4 - Larger cap ID (~.01)
5 - Thinner c-clip grove (~.02 OD)
6 - smaller c-clips.

In my layman's understanding of those changes, it appears to add up to a stronger joint.

Dana/Spicer, on the other hand, insists that they're not. Go figure. They feel beefier. Either way I'll run em till they break ;)

Hey Mike! Howzit? You shooting for heading to Hollister on the 9th?

I found these two pages on Dana's site:
http://www.spicerdriveshaft.com/cardan/cardan-timetempered.html

http://www.spicerdriveshaft.com/cardan/cardan-life.html

The pix on the pages look like the 297-x on the first and the 5-760 on the second. Note the blurb on the first, "Spicer Time-Tempered universal joint kits should NOT be used in high-performance vehicles, motorsport applications or vehicles frequently used in severe off-road conditions."

Spicer is backordered on the 5-760x right now. Highangle said it would be about a week or 2 till they get some more.
