For those who have installed the parts store electric fans, did you just use the zip tie style fastners that came with it or did you fabricate any cowling?
I had these on my Discovery, installed them when I put a new waterpump on, and the truck still got hot on occation. I am sure that the radiator was the next issue to deal with.
But now I am driving a RRC and would like to install them and had thought that a cowl may be necessary. They move plenty of air, its the lack of surface coverage that I am thinking of.
Am I going to regret not buying the nice ones some people run? I did get the thermostat so they will be fully automatic.

The Flexalite 210s come with a cowling.

Flexalite would be the nicer ones I was referring to, couldn't remember the name.

I've got two Toyota Corona fans (don't know the US model name). They have their own cowl and two side by side is an almost perfect fit for the rangie radiator.
Hack job is a bit nice to describe the current way they're hanging on though.
The overheating problem I had wasn't actually a heating problem, it was a gauge problem, it was giving me a false sense of despair.

I still have my main belt driven fan. I replaced the two A/C aux fans in front of the condensor. It had two metal straps that when across the front, I used those to mount them up.

I use one Hayden electric fan @ this time. Part # 3690 fits well into the area after the cowl is removed. Two 3690's will fit side by side if needed. I have stayed cool with one so far, but will install a second one if needed. I used 2 - 3/16 aluminum strips about 7/8" wide to make brackets that run from top to bottom on the back of the radiator surround. I just couldn't bring myself to put the ties through the radiator. I have used the ties on other vehicles, though, with no problem. Hope this helps! LRWheelman

LRWheelman- Strips of aluminum for brackets, thats what i was thinking of doing, I will see if that keeps me cool enough. I already have two of them so they should be sufficient on a good radiator, I know the radiator in this truck has less then 10K miles on it.
I have not earned my master metal working wings yet so I would hate to see what I would have come up with for a cowl. If I could build it out of wood I could build it in my sleep.

Build it out of wood. Coat wood in wax. Fiberglass, use the wood as the mold.

Or just have a wooden shroud.
Then your Rangie has wood. :flipoff2:

I just did the Flex-A-Lite 210's. Best add on to the truck as of yet. It was 115 degrees last week and the rig ran as cool as ever! Total install time was less than 2 hours. I use 68" of 1x1 angle aluminum and a handfull of aluminum pop rivets.

I am assuming that you removed the factory viscous fan? or is this in addition to that fan?
