My neighbor has a jeep cherokee in his back yard and said I could take it off his hands. I was thinking about hanging some full width axles under it. Has any one done this?? Is there anything I should know about?? I am a toyota guy but this thing is free and would be a fun cheap project I just don't know jack about the cherokees. So enlighten me. Has it been done? Have any pics, any sudjestions? Thanks.

Sure it can be done... no its not that much differant than putting full width axles under a Toyota with the exception there is no frame... i have toyed with the idea of building a 2" x 4" frame and moving all the stock suspension down to it... would make for alot of lift...

What year Cherokee...

Go for it, but allow me to give you a little bit of advice....

Strengthen the hell out of the spring mounts when you put the full width axles in. It isn't a hard job at all, but I've seen lots of XJs tear and bend the frame at the spring mounts. One of the better jobs that I have seen used a combo of box tubing and plate under and along side the frame to build a new spring mount. Considerably stronger that the stock crap. The load on the mounts was spread over a much larger surface area. Look closely at the XJs driven by guys with a heavy right foot, big axles, or larger tires. The rear leaf bolt is usually all hogged out on the frame.

my friend just picked up his D60 yesterday and is beginning the rebuild today. It will get put in on easter week. His cherokee is going to be HUGE. with lots of frame strenghening.

I've got a friend who did it to one, used long arms in the front and national coils in the rear, had arround 6" of lift and 35's looked small with the wide axles. personally I'd use some ford radius arms on the front, to easy to set up on the axle, and you can buy the frame mount from ford.

yep. plan is to go 63in chevy in the rear

we were going to go leaf spring in the front but i am learning more about suspension design every day so i may design a 4-link for teh front and maybe the rear later. He already fits 35's on a 3 in lift (due to massive fender trimming) :D

edit: he blew out his rear d44 with 31's (he GETS IT)

so he might need something stronger for 38's

i talked to him last night and he has the rear D60 in. he says the lugs stick out to where the out past the side of his cherokee:eek:

he is doing some temporary ghetto rigging so he can drive it again. He also decided 38's are too small and that more cutting is required. our new target size is 40's. It was also determined the leaf spring conversion will continue and the 4 link is out. (due to simplicity)

due to simplicity, I'd X the leaf springs and use radius arms, and still have an approach angle, the front fenders can be cut a lot, but your still going to be hitting the fire wall and the back of the turn signal with 40's even with that width.

the front axel is going to be moved forward by the springs. and there already has been some "modification" of the firewall via a giant hammer, and there will be more if necissary. It's his rig so he gets what he wants. Turn signals and the front is not a concern, he torched off everything related to the bumper:D It will look good when we are done, you'll see.

thanks for the comments and concerns
