Let me get this straight... you want to ruin your crawl ratio by removing the T18 in favor of an auto, then recover a small fraction of your previous crawl by getting a lower-geared TC? Ok...

Probably your best bet is a TF727, used in FSJ's in the 80's and 90's. This bolts up directly to a AMC360 and D300 TC, which has a lower range of 2.62:1 as opposed to the D20's 2.02:1. Of course, this is not without some minor problems. Read HERE (http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/convtrans/conv727.html) for more complete info.

I'll be happy to take that troublesome old T18 off your hands if you decide to go through with this swap.

Another alternative if low range is your prime concern is the Tera-Low 3.15:1 kit for the D20. With that and the granny T18, you will be able to travel slow enough that even elderly women in Oldsmobuicks will wonder what the hold-up is.

Thanks for the input guys, I probably should just keep the T-18, I have always been a auto guy though. I didnt realize this tranny was that much better ratio wise compared to an auto! If I kept the T-18, what is the prefered t-case that you would suggest to use, keep in mind I dont have money growing out of my ears. Thanks again.:smokin:

Do you have a wide ratio or close ratio T18??

don't let them fool you. i just got my jeep going again after swapping in a vortec350. while i was at it i also swapped my old np435 for a th400 and i tell you i love the auto. if you can't crawl with an auto something is wrong. mine did great. i was worried about switching after running a manual for so many years but after i've done it i'd do it again. i do agree your best bet is to get a 727 from a 80's waggy though. if you get one that had a np208 (drivers side drop) a jeep dana300 or an atlas will bolt right up. :D

thanks thats what I thought also, an auto is easier on the drive train also. The link that fullygruntled put up was very helpful now I just have to find the parts. I have to switch my gears in my rear-ends anyhow so I'll just make sure everything jives when I'm done. Thanks for the input everyone!:)

some really great info here. I have a fawked up Q tho. Maybe I'm :smokin: some REALLY good stuff here, but I think I saw a thread that the AMC bolt pattern was the same as the SB Chrysler? PLEASE tell me I'm just :smokin: too much. (and I don't even smoke):rasta:

You are definately :smokin: some good stuff.. The AMC and Mopar trannys have completely different patterns.. Mopar trannys used in Jeeps used a specially cast case that incorporated the AMC pattern..

Also note that the problems occur when installing it in a CJ .I may have missed something (its early)It appears its going in a FSJ Make sure the front output is on the correct side.Go for the auto.

I thought so. I know chevy better than anything else, I had heard an URBAN LEGEND that the chrysler 360 was the same as the AMC 360, I seriously didn't think so, but hey, when someone is playing in unknown territory, I guess that I COULD be gullible once in a while.:flipoff2: :smokin:
