So I finally got my new motor mounts. and wow, those do look like really crappy welds. all of you who said how obvious it was as soon as you looked at them? you were right.
hopefully I'll remember to stop by home to grab my camera before I lay a bead with some penetration.
boy it'll be nice to get my fan out of the shroud and stop the engine from bouncing around after speed bumps :D

sorry, no pics for a day or two, but I got the broken one taken care of. I definitely misunderstood about where these mounts break, and I really think I could have made the 2wd work better than the 4x4. when I've got $200 to burn maybe I'll buy and try... or find a junkyard 2 wheeler someday.
In the mean time I'm looking into making a brace between the mounts to mimic the support the IFS center section gave them. Haven't decided for sure if I'll bother but it's a thought I'm having since they're only really being held on by a slot and a stud with no other bracing in a solid axle setup.
pictures soon.

I picked mine up at the junkyard both for $50. What do the 2wd ones look like?

as best I could tell from crawling around under a really low truck in a parking lot, rather than the 3 piece stamped-bolted-welded design of the 4x4, it's a cast piece that just runs from the bushing directly to the engine block.
The only issue would be that they are missing that tie-in to the bell housing on the block side of the 2 piece 4x4 mount, but that could probably be sandwiched in without much trouble after some trimming if it's even really needed.
I wish I had a decent junkyard around here...

If the 2wd doesn't need the brace then I wouldn't think you would on the 4x4. I did leave that piece on mine just in case. And it is kind of a nice heat shield for the starter.

that's kind of my thought too but at the same time two more bolts holding the bellhousing in place can't be a bad thing. and you're right about the heat sheild.
oh well, maybe next time. though I really don't think that TIG job is going anywhere... (pics still "on their way" - sitting in my camera still)

These all link to fullsize images. I tried geeking out and getting a dynamic resizing thing going on for these but it was way too slow on my underpowered server.
so first the fan shroud carnage:

the cheeseball stock welds on the mounts:

Something doesn't quite match here....

The old mount & bushing still attached to the small piece of the larger half that bolts to the block and bellhousing. I'd assume this is the normal place that these break but it isn't what I was expecting from what I'd read. pictures > *

My buddy Colin showed up so I let him run the TIG for a while. This is sticking the block half of the mount back together.

The old mount in place, complete with leaking PS pump and rusty headers. You can't see that it's broken at the block at all.

My cleanup of the cheesy factory welds on the new mount

Didn't get a shot of the repaired block half, but it's TIGed on both sides so if it doesn't hold I'm doing something different (like 2wd mounts).
Still need to do the passenger side but now that I know what I'm looking for I can say with confidance that it's not broken right now, and most importantly the fan shroud damage has stopped.
