i think the earth mate witha a laptop looks to be the coolest deal
but the lil handhelds will tell you where you are.
i got BURNED and bought a $$$ony and they immediately droppped the line.

the laptop one would be cool as delorme is the leader in gps maps

I've got a Garmin GPS III + and it does the job really well. I went out to Moab to test it out. Saved all my "roads" in it and then the next time I went out I could find the trails no problem. Pretty handy little device.

I use a Magellan hand held. It works great in the vehicle but I use it alot when I am out hunting, for marking trails, treestands, game trails and most importantly for finding my way back to the truck.

Should be selling my Garmin 3+ with some accessories (two remote antenna's) etc. to a guy at work for $400! Want to go with a larger color display!

I run a Compaq Ipaq. Nice because you can use them for more than just GPS. Keep your contact list in there use pocket excel to create or use spreadsheets. Maptech has some windows CE software. Here are a few links:http://www.maptech.com/land/TerrainNavigator/index.cfm

Here is the DGPS I am running:

I use a Garmin GPS12. A good basic workhorse at good price...PLUS... I have can hook it up to my lap top and run DeLorme Topo USA to give me real time actual location and travel, on an easily viewable lap top screen. I got the cable interface which links my GPS to my laptop, plus has a power tap to plug the GPS into your 12v plug so your batteries don't run out. The lap top also has a 12v plug power supply....

I use a Garmin Etrex - Summit model. I've used the basic model and it's fine. Just make sure to buy a power cable so you can run it off the vehicle 12V. They EAT batteries. Etrex models are waterproof and you can wash oil off them. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Also cheap is good here if you are in danger of loosing / breaking it.

I've looked at the web sites for magellan (which I understand isn't a good choice) and garmin.

I don't know a thing about a gps, but I saw that both lines' models stored 20 routes, correct?

That means what, for over 20 routes, you write the info down and carry it with you, and input coordinates as you travel to, say a trail head for example?:D
