I have a 4.10 D70 dually under my 78 Power Wagon and wondered what it would have in it from the factory. The truck was originally a rear wheel drive truck built for a Fire Department. I know where a late 90's D70 non dually is ( from an F-350) and the owner says it has a posi unit in it with 3.23 gears. Would it be worth the $200 to have it put into my axle? Are the Dodge and Ford D70's different?

I "think" the only factory dana LS unit was a PowerLoc which are about as good as they get...I would rebuild it before I installed it though...rebuilding is VERY easy.

As far as a D70 being a D70, the carriers should be the same and interchange. But the bearings might be different.

Also, make sure the spline counts are the same...I do not know if all D70s were 35-spline...I have actually seen quite a few D60HDs (that people thought were D70s) with 1.31" 30-spline axles.

Steved, thx for the reply's

Would the factory 1978 Dodge D70 dually axle I have now, have a LS unit in it already? How can one tell without dropping the cover?

Jack up the axle with both tires off the ground and put it either in gear or in park. Try and rotate one of the wheels. If it turns, look to see if the opposite side is turning backwards. If it does, it's an open rear. If you can't turn it, Take it out of gear and try. if you can turn it then and both tires rotate the same direction then it probably has a linited slip unit. If you turn it and the other wheel stays still and you hear a light clicking noise, then it's probably a locker of some sort. If they both rotate the same direction with no clicking or slack in it when you change direction of rotation, then it's probably welded. I think that about covers it, someone correct me if I got any of it wrong...

Close this thread, because that pretty much sums it all up. I have a question for you Squeaker, Are you running a d70 dually axle under a truck with single wheels on it? If you are, how is the track? Are the front wheels in line with rear? I have a d70 dually axle with a 4.10's and a powerlock that I'd like to run.

Thx guys!

Dcrew,
The D70 under the truck now has dually tires on it. I don't know for sure how the track would be with singles. I have some old 33x12.5's on the front D60 I put under the truck, and the rear dually tires are only about 1 - 1 1/2" wider on each side than the fronts. If that tells you anything.

I have a D60 from another truck I will likely do a disc brake mod on someday

I will only add that a high mileage tracloc or powerloc will act as open differentials since they do use spider gears. In theory, you are correct, but a worn out LS in some cases will act open.
