Great pics, I wanna go one day. Hey, what's the deal on getting gas in places like that? Do you need to pull a fuel trailer or can you buy gas every day or two?

They pull feul trailers to the places.. They last for some days.. If a trailer cannot reach the place they buy feul from the place where it is available in drums and take it higher up...

Pakistan was very popular with America's hippie generation, lots of private Americans made some fabulous trips in the 60s and 70s to Pakistan, India, western China, Burma, Nepal and Tibet. It has to be some of the most fabulous scenery in the world. But politics started to interfere in the 80s and 90s and now it's pretty dangerous:

Hopefully it will get better soon and we can all go jeepin' in Pakistan. I wonder, what if we started a foreign aide program to supply CJs, big tires and lift kits to all the farmers and herders living in all the different countries of the Himalayas. Maybe then they'd all get together and form a new, peaceful country called Jeepistan .

I would just like to say that all of you ppl are more than welcome to visit Paksitan along woth your Jeeps and 4x4s.. About the foreign aid program proposal.. We have a lot of CJs here in Pakistan but we could do with a few lift kits and the expertise of installing them... In fact we can do with one lift kit.. The rest we can build here ourselves [ taking care of the copyrights ofcourse]..

Hey ehsankiani, do you really think it would be relatively safe for a small group of Americans or Europeans to go out driving around in the mountains now? I know our media tends to exaggerate things, but I was under the impression that there were a lot of armed guerillas/bandits in the mountains. I hope I'm wrong, what do you think? Are some areas better than others?

Lots of Guerillas/bandits in the mountains.. Well I think there is a bit of exageration there in the media... And safety depends on a few things..
1- Where you are wheeling.. Around Islamabad it would be perfectly safe.. Even in most of the North West Fronteir Province[NWFP- I will post a map here too] It is quite safe.. In just a few places like the tribal areas[they are not anything like the way the phrase tribal areas sounds... No wild ppl wearing wild sheep skin.. just normal ppl:D ]I wouldnt say it would be safe to go alone..

2- Who you have with you.. If I go with you to any tribal areas I will make sure we have with us a few armed guards loyal to some local big shot.. If you have local ppl with you who know the local language.. it is quite safe..

I am talking about the Nothern areas here only.. The south has a much better reputition.. Specially with the present government..
I could really go on and on.. If any of you do plan to come tell me.. I will arrange thing for you ppl.. You will find the ppl here most hospitable and freindly--- the vast majority are like that whereever in Pakistan you are..

Yep, now that's the secret. Thanks for the offer, hopefully I'll be in a position to take you up on that sometime in the next coupla years. That "Come Back Alive" link I posted above, that's the web site for an organization called Danger Finders. It's kind of like the POR of war correspondents. Its run by a couple guys who have friends like you all over the world. You do agree, then, that without local help it could sticky? I'm not saying that's a bad thing, there's probably places in the US where that's true, too.

Those are some awesome mountains. Definitely document your trip and tell us all about it.

Hey.. do something.. dont take my word for it.. lots of ppl from the US, the UK and other counntries have visited Pakistan and documented their trips.. Just do a search on Google.com or something and you will find a few articles.. Roaming around alone in most of the places would be safe here but offcarse there are a few places where it is not recomended..

the key in most foreign places is not to stand out. Granted thats hard in a fully decked out jeep, but as long as you don't agitate or whatnot, you should be fine. Another thing is to buy local clothes, which is what my sis did when she went abroad. People usually miss you in crowds if you are dressed like everyone else. beautiful country there, I'd love to visit after this whole dumbass war thing calms down.

That is some different wheelin country out there. Those ice glacier paths look fun. Have you guys seen any of the craters left by those new thermoberic bombs in afganistan? That would be kinda fun to wheel in one of those too! I think if I was in the area I would go find one of those things just dork around in one!
