: .Some 60 and hummer wheel questions
Rob Kosinski 02-26-2002, 02:20 PM I just bought a mint CJ-7 .. I wanna do 60s F&R. I have been searching all day and it seems that the Chevy front and Ford rear are they way to go. I wanna run them full width and use hummer wheels. Does anyone have measurements or picks of a similar setup. Are the ford and chevy similar widths. Finally It is gonna be awesome to build a SWB with a frame. Thanks.
Mieser 02-26-2002, 02:45 PM That sounds like a good plan, heres some misc stuff...
-Personally I like the high pinion ford front. depending on how much work you are doing to the transmission and t-case this might not be a bad way to go. I like having the front driveline up out of the way.
-Most D60 fronts are 69-70" wide. The rear D60s are in the 65-66" range. Van rear ends are wider and a better match for the front.
-Hummer wheels can bring everything back down in size if you are going to leave everything full width. In the front you will have to watch out for clearances though, I do not think you can install a hummer wheel on a D60 without mods.
-I would pay the extra cash to have the front cut down on the long side so you can just bolt it up to the spring width you have now. Outboarding springs on a CJ frame can quickly lead to cracks on the front framerails.
-If you narrow the front you will be almost perfect for a regular rear end. You should also try and find a 35spline rear....which is harder than it sounds.

Heep-II 02-26-2002, 03:53 PM Yup, doing something simular to mine right now.
I'm not as fortunate to be able to use the 60 front, I'm using a H.D. 8 lug 44 front, 60 rear..
The Hummer wheels are sweet too. this guy actually has them for sale (crew@matcom.usmc.mil ).he is very fair, and will ship. Cheap bead locks with run flats to inset some of the width. They also come with magnesium run flats too if you like . This will allow you to drive off the trail without stopping and plugging it up for everybody else or driving out of a bad spot to a better one first. The only drawback is that you can't really balance them with the run flat installed. the wheels set so far inboard, you have to modify the steering. if you are going spring over axle ( SOA) you might want to check these folks out. www.jeepxtremes.com -they build a steering system to your specs especially designed to use hummer wheels and all..Heim joints, or Tie rod ends, with solid bar stock for tie rods and drag links..Guarantees included..
Hope that helps a bit..

Ahhh Pinocchio,,,,,,,,, :D :D
Humvee wheels, mag runflats, 38.5 X 14.5 SX's,,,,,, totally balanced with only 3.25 ozs on one front and 3.5 ozs on the other.
Supergper 02-26-2002, 05:33 PM Hey Pyro, who built your arms...I want the behind the axle steering ...and do you mind me asking...why did you mount your draglink under the arm and not on top???
"Ant" made up the arms for me, he's with the SRC(the club, not that link in the other post) but is on this broard also for time to time.
I have the outboarded springs mounted higher on the frame then typically done to lower the CG. By doing this , the space beteen the frame and spring
is minimal. Mounting to the bottom of the arm allows for more compression but as you can see from the scratchs on the drag link, it still touchs. Going to notch the frame slightly for more clearance.
Supergper 02-26-2002, 05:49 PM Thanks...I knew you would have a reason for mounting them that way!!!

3/4tonYJ 02-26-2002, 06:15 PM don't know anything about your front, but i fit hummer wheels on my 3/4ton dodge dana 60 rear without anymodifications...

Supergper 02-26-2002, 06:42 PM well most, if not all, rears should fit the hummer wheels w/o any problems...its the steering arms on the front that endup having clearance probelms(you should know this aren't you running them at all corners???)
Rob Kosinski 02-26-2002, 08:30 PM I guess I have to figure out what tranny and tcase I wanna run. I was thinking of keeping the 300 and running a T18. But it might end up being a atlas. I dumped a ton of money into my XJ so I wanna keep the cj bulletproof and on a budget. I just need to decide if I wanna run 38s or not. If its 38s it 60s all the way.

lt1yj 02-27-2002, 07:06 AM I slipped the hummer rims over my Ford 60 outer and it just barely interferes with the tie rod end on the drag link. I can rotate it out of the way for clearance but it will rub sometimes.
The caliper is just a hair away from hitting. Some grinding for clearance and it looks like it would be fine.
I tried the same on Chevy and Dodge. No deal. The caliper interferes by at least 1/4" probably more like 3/8" and it looks like it will get worse as you grind on the caliper because of the ramp on the inside of the rim. The rims was about 3/4" away from seating on the hub flange when if first interefered.
The drag link also interferes by about the same amount.
well i am building ford 60 front and a tera 60 rear with 14 bolt hubs
i am goint to run avanlanches steering arms and high steer do you think i iwll have problems with the hummer wheels rubbing anywhere?
lt1yj 02-27-2002, 02:58 PM Pyro,
What mods did you make to the caliper to get it to clear the hummer rims? Did you use spacers on the flanges? Did you have to cut the drag link mounts off to clear?
BTW the steering arm looks nice!
